Position Summary

The Director of Labor Relations is responsible for managing and coordinating collective bargaining and associated processes and requirements under the National Labor Relations Act across Weill Cornell Medicine. Reporting to the Senior Director of Human Resources, this role will coordinate activities across the organization to accomplish labor relations objectives on behalf of Weill Cornell Medicine to be consistent with our overall employment practices.

The Director of Labor Relations will play a key role in supporting employee relations and labor relations goals, which includes fulfillment of WCM collective bargaining obligations.

Job Responsibilities
  • Represent WCM in labor negotiations, including as the primary spokesperson. Involved in first contract bargaining, successor contract bargaining, midterm bargaining, decisional/impact bargaining, and accretion bargaining.
  • Help lead in the creation, interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements and will serve as a liaison to entities concerning negotiation and administration of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Provide advice and consultation related to bargaining unit employees, including administration and interpretation of contracts, discipline, organizational planning and restructuring, layoffs, classifications, policy and precedent.
  • Foster and manage effective relationships with union leadership and membership to create and advance working relationships while pursuing WCM's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate with various organization departments on Weill Cornell Medicine response to union organizing campaigns and job actions.
  • Ensure contractual requirements related to union membership are met.
  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure furtherance of employee relations, labor relations and collective bargaining objectives. Facilitates discussions with labor unions toward the resolution of disputes and ensuring healthy labor-management relations.
  • Participate in special projects such as HR system implementations, HR reporting on labor matters, systems testing, or other similar functions as needed such as wage and benefit programs, labor relations reporting, and other related responsibilities.
  • Identifies labor relations aspects of various projects or ongoing needs. Helps build appropriate job aides and training for manager/supervisory training; prepares the organization for collective bargaining negotiations, mediations, and arbitrations.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in labor relations, human resources, industrial relations or related field
Experience
  • Law degree or Master's degree in Industrial Labor/Employee Relations, Human Resources preferred
  • A minimum of seven years experience in the areas of labor relations and/or collective bargaining
  • NLRA/NLRB experience
  • Leadership and Supervisory experience required
  • Experience in a university setting preferred
  • Experience in contract negotiations, with experience as lead negotiator preferred

  • Successfully cultivating relationships with both internal and external constituents
  • Leading a team and managing highly motivated and high functioning individuals
  • Understanding, interpreting, and applying labor laws
  • Comfortably working with data, reviewing reports and providing recommendations
  • Working proactively, independently, and reliably under tight time frames in a versatile environment
Licenses and Certifications
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification is preferred
