SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE
The Caseworker II - District Attorney performs a full range of legal secretarial and paralegal duties. The incumbent must be bondable and pass a background check with the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety. Employees of the District Attorney's Office are mandatory reporters per NRS 432B.220.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:

Opens criminal and civil cases, sets up case file, requests supplemental information from law enforcement, generates criminal histories, scans all paperwork into the case management software program, and provides case management through filing a complaint or petition or until case disposition.

Acts as a liaison between the district attorney, deputy district attorneys, local and out-of-town attorneys, judges, secretaries, investigators, law enforcement agencies, victims, witnesses, defendants, insurance companies, and clerks of the court.

Consults with and assists attorneys in case preparation, investigation, and research.
Collaborates and coordinates with local and other city, county, and state personnel on case preparation and investigation.
Researches, assists in the preparation of, and proofreads legal documents for attorney's review.
Prepares or directs the preparation of discovery for defense attorneys, victims, and other authorized parties. Ensures only discoverable material is released and that the discovery packets are complete and accurate.
Analyzes, processes, and directs incoming paperwork to the appropriate destination.
Enters and verifies incoming reports and booking information.
Calendars hearings, meetings, appointments, and monitors filing deadlines ensuring statutory time limits are met. Verifies calendared entries.
Logs documents, conversations, and other activities to maintain accurate case histories and calendared records.
Ensures pleadings, correspondence, and other documents are reviewed, proofread, promptly filed, and forwarded to the assigned attorney as warranted.
Subpoenas victims and witnesses. Locates witnesses for service as needed. Ensures their attendance at the hearing or trial.
Makes travel arrangements for out-of-town witnesses and arranges for the payment of travel expenses and witness fees.
Maintains knowledge of local, state, and federal programs, resources, and services available to victims and their families.

Keeps witnesses and victims apprised of the status of the case, notifying them of continuances, computing restitution, problem-solving, helping to prepare victim impact statements, and arranging for releases of evidence.

May be subpoenaed to testify in court about communications with witnesses and victims.

Retrieves case files for the attorneys ensuring that initial case preparation work is completed, and that all necessary documentation is in the file.

Prepares letters, and legal documents for notices, motions, stipulations, writs, appeals, resolutions, agreements, complaints, and occasional child support documents.
Prepares evidence for courtroom use. Makes sure all exhibits are available and marked for admission. Makes or arranges for demonstrative evidence.
Enters, verifies and makes available for statistical analysis the full dispositions on closed cases. Removes physical files from the open filing system and refiles in the closed system.
Initiates, maintains and closes civil subject index files regarding civil, litigation, personnel cases, and research files.

Updates the office manager and/or assistant office manager on work status and important developments they may need to know to function effectively.

Provides coverage for other support staff and receptionists as needed.
Attends meetings, conferences, and trainings as requested which may include travel.
Participates in community outreach programs.
Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent
Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:
Knowledge
Basic knowledge of legal documents, legal terminology, and court procedures.
Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and regulations.
Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including county case management software programs, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.

Reading, understanding, applying, and explaining technical laws and legal procedures.
Preparing precise legal pleadings and letters.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
Work is performed in an office or cubicle setting.
Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk.
The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Frequent interruptions to planned work activities should be expected.
Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust and fumes.
Work is performed in a potentially violent, traumatic, highly charged emotional environment. The employee will be exposed to angry, abusive, and upset individuals.

Tools and equipment used include a personal computer, printer, scanner, multi-line telephone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, postage machine, CD/DVD digital extraction, and redaction software, and other associated office equipment.

Incumbent will occasionally be asked to travel in a passenger vehicle.
