Position Summary

This position is responsible for directing the college's TeachUp Academy & Indigenous Teacher Preparation Program within the college's Teacher Education/TeachUp program. This individual will also serve as a mentor for Indigenous ALP candidates who do NOT have a qualified mentor teacher available at their school of employment. Success in the position is defined as an increase in recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of Indigenous students and teacher candidates participating in the Alternative Licensure & TeachUp Academy programs.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Responsible for implementing and coordinating San Juan College's TeachUp Academy including oversight of a culturally relevant curriculum, the experiential, clinical and work-based aspects of the program, student progression, and articulation and transfer.
  • This position works with each participating district to develop a comprehensive, culturally specific program of professional development (for licensed teachers) to be offered at San Juan College.
  • This position works closely with partnering districts/schools to design a program to train and support the mentors in local schools. These trained mentors (TeachUp Academy Mentors) will then work closely with new teachers in their first two years of teaching. (With an emphasis on supporting Indigenous teachers and teacher candidates.)
  • Provide mentorship to new Indigenous teachers in their first two years of teaching.
  • Develop ongoing professional learning for mentors as well as Indigenous teachers new to the field.
  • Counsels and advises Indigenous teacher education students concerning academic and career goals.
  • Provide mentors of teachers support throughout the school year as they guide new Indigenous teachers through the instructional improvement process.
  • Ensures timely and accurate submission of state and federal mandated reports.
  • Maintains relationships with community stakeholders; assists the Senior Director of Teacher Education with coordinating the Teacher Education Advisory Council meetings; visits area schools and centers and attends community events.
  • Maintains expertise in New Mexico teaching requirements by representing the College on statewide committees and meetings, including various PED, HED, and other entities. Participates in meetings of the New Mexico Public Education Department's New Mexico Indian Education Division meetings.
  • Maintains appropriate State certifications.
  • Serves as the Core Faculty Advisor for Indigenous students seeking Alternative Licensure/Residency Education certificates.
  • Seeks new grant opportunities and performs grant management duties.
  • Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include accreditation requirements, grant requirements, and college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops program guidelines.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied duties in coordinating the college's TeachUp Academy. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to coordinate the TeachUp Academy & Indigenous Teacher Preparation Programs. Success in this position results in the efficient and effective provision of programming to students, timely reports to the NMPED as needed, collaborative instructional and planning steps and well-communicated transparent support of teachers locally among various sites and in various programs.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, child care directors and teachers, public school teachers and administrators, Head Start program staff, state education officials, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or classroom.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over Administrative Assistant (1)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors' degree in Education required.
  • Must hold a Level II or Level III Teaching License from the New Mexico Public Education Department.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
