Description

The Adapted Kinesiology Aide works under the supervision of a Kinesiology/Adapted Kinesiology instructor or designee to support students with disabilities in an Adapted Kinesiology program. The aide assists with exercises, classes, activities, and /or therapeutic interventions designed to improve students' physical fitness, mobility, and overall well-being. This position may include working in a variety of gymnasium-like settings, such as a weight room and/or an aquatic environment to facilitate exercises.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Representative duties are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

Demonstrate and assist students with adapted exercises and activities both on land and/or in the pool.
Provide individualized support to students based on their physical and therapeutic needs.
Prepare and maintain kinesiology and aquatic equipment, ensuring it is safe and ready for use.
Assist in setting up and breaking down equipment before and after classes; report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the instructor according to established guidelines.
Communicate effectively with instructors, students, and other staff members.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to privacy standards concerning student records and disabilities.
Provide encouragement and motivation to students during physical activities.
May assist with basic physical needs of students during activities, including transfers and positioning.
Be attentive to the physical and emotional needs of students, ensuring a supportive learning environment.
Monitor students during activities and classes to ensure safety and proper technique.
For aquatics-related activities: Assist students with entering, exiting, and moving within the pool; ensure that the pool environment is safe, clean, and conducive to learning.
Related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in kinesiology, physical therapy, or a related field is preferred.
Experience working with individuals with disabilities, especially in a physical education or therapeutic setting.
For aquatic-related activities: Experience in aquatic environments, such as lifeguarding, swim instruction, or aquatic therapy, is highly desirable.

Skills and Abilities:
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students with diverse abilities.
Knowledge of basic kinesiology principles, especially those related to adapted physical education.
Ability to maintain a safe and supportive environment in both land and aquatic settings.
For aquatic-related activities - CPR, First Aid, and possibly Lifeguard certification may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands:

The role requires frequent physical activity, including walking, standing, bending, lifting, and swimming. The aide must be capable of moving continuously for extended periods.
The ability to assist students with physical disabilities, which may include lifting or supporting students during transfers in and out of the pool, assisting with exercises, or providing physical support during aquatic activities.
Aquatic environment only:Proficiency in swimming is required, as the role involves being in the pool with students. The aide must be able to swim and perform water-based exercises or activities as needed.
The position requires good manual dexterity for tasks such as adjusting equipment, assisting students with fine motor exercises, and managing small items related to therapy.
The aide must be able to see, hear, and speak clearly to ensure effective communication with students and staff, as well as to monitor the safety of the students in and around the pool. Vision: See in the normal range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal range with or without correction.
The aide may need to maintain a high level of endurance to support students through repetitive physical tasks and to remain in the water for potentially long periods, if assigned to an aquatic environment.

Working Environment:

All Adapted Kinesiology Aides:
The working environment may have varying noise levels, especially during group activities or when multiple classes are in session in the same facility.
The aide will frequently interact with students who have a range of physical and cognitive abilities. This requires patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt to different communication styles and physical needs.
The aide must be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, such as a student experiencing difficulty in the water or a medical issue arising during physical activities. Ability to perform physical tasks related to assisting students in Adapted Kinesiology classes and/or aquatic activities.

Aquatic Environment (If assigned):
The aide will spend a significant portion of their work time in a pool environment. This requires comfort with water activities and the ability to work in a humid, chlorinated atmosphere.
The aide may be exposed to varying temperatures, including warm, humid conditions around the pool area and cooler conditions when transitioning between different areas.
The pool environment presents potential hazards, such as wet and slippery surfaces. The aide must be vigilant in maintaining safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
There may be exposure to pool chemicals, such as chlorine, used in maintaining water quality. Appropriate precautions, including proper handling and ventilation, must be followed to minimize risks.

Supplemental Information

Work Schedule: TBD - Schedule and shift vary and are subject to change in accordance with the department's needs.

Hours per Week: Up to 25

Employment Conditions and Information: This is a short-term, temporary, hourly Non-Bargaining Unit (NBU) assignment, not to exceed 160 days and 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1st through June 30th). Short-term, temporary NBU positions may only be used on an intermittent, seasonal, or project basis. Education Code Section 88003 states "Short-term employee means any person who is employed to perform a service for the district, upon the completion of which, the service required or similar services will not be extended or needed on a continuing basis."

After successful completion of the onboarding requirements, an individual may be employed by the South Orange County Community College District (SOCCCD) as a short-term, temporary NBU employee. Employment will be on an "if and as needed" basis, as determined by the SOCCCD. The assignment may be shortened or extended at any time, due to departmental needs, with little to no notice. NBU employment is at-will, and either party may terminate this working relationship at any time. Neither party shall be required to provide any reason for the separation. NBU employees shall not have reemployment rights or recourse to petition to be reinstated.

NBU employees are limited to working in a single position for a single department and site (assignments are onsite only).

NBU employees are paid on a monthly basis. The payroll reporting period is from the 15th of the first month to the 14th of the second month. NBU employees are paid on the 10th of the third month.

Example : For the following reporting period: September 15th through October 14th, the NBU employee will be paid on November 10th.

NBU employees who work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year are required to contribute to the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), through payroll deduction. The SOCCCD does not intend to employ NBU employees for more than 960 hours during any fiscal year.
