Job Summary
As an academic advisor assigned to work under federal guidelines on the TRIO/SSS Program, the primary focus of this position is to ensure compliance with TRIO/SSS Program regulations. Advises students on academic requirements, career options, and extracurricular opportunities. Monitors student academic and personal progress and employs intervention strategies as necessary. Establishes meaningful relationships with students, faculty, staff, Cleveland State University (CSU) resources and the community. Interacts professionally with all internal and external customers using strong interpersonal skills. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Student Personnel Services, Adult Learning & Development, Counseling, Guidance, Business Administration or related field of study.
  • Experience working in student services area of a college or university


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree, preferably in Student Personnel Services, Adult Learning & Development, Counseling, Guidance, Business Administration or related field of study.
  • One (1) year experience in academic or career advising in a college or university setting.
  • Experience working with diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with student programs and services provided through TRIO grants or similar educational initiatives.

  • Strong organizational and excellent interpersonal skills and have a "Customer Focus" attitude and delivery.
  • Skilled in project management, problem-solving, analysis, follow-through, influence and persuasion.
  • Possess strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to motivate, coach and develop others.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of managing large amounts of data, maintain detailed comprehensive records, analyze and organize information, and have time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively engage with team members to ensure appropriate communication and develop effective plans.
  • Working knowledge of student development, education policy and trends.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends, as assigned.
