Reporting to the Director of Immigrant Services, the Immigrant Services Student Success Counselor will utilize equity and asset-based practices to contribute to the success of prospective, new, and continuing immigrant students. This position will assist degree and non-degree seeking immigrant students with all aspects of enrolling at the College, including, but not limited to: admissions, placement testing, financial aid, course registration, transfer, and career planning. They will pay special attention to how immigration status affects the access and navigational experiences of non-U.S. citizen students, including but not limited to those who are undocumented, asylees, refugees, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

In addition to supporting immigrant students with the enrollment process, the Immigrant Services Student Success Counselor will contribute to immigrant students' success by assessing students' needs and facilitating immigration-specific workshops and trainings that improve immigrant students' learning and sense of belonging at BHCC.

This is a hybrid position that requires in person and remote work. The ability to work weekends and evenings is required.

Specific Duties:

Enrollment and Student Support Services (70%)

  • Guide new degree and non-degree seeking immigrant students with all aspects of enrolling at the College, with special attention to how different immigration statuses affect the enrollment process.
  • Assist prospective immigrant students and their families, both one-on-one or in group sessions, with navigating the College application, reviewing admissions requirements, processing course waivers, and registering for courses.
  • Conduct enrollment outreach calls to prospective, new, and continuing immigrant students.
  • Assist Tuition Equity-eligible students in completing the High School Completer form and the new Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid (MASFA).
  • Facilitate one-on-one and group financial planning for immigrant students of various temporary immigration statuses. This includes information dissemination on several types of access to scholarships, state financial aid programs and the implications of federal, state and city policies on students' eligibility for financial aid.
  • Assist undocumented students in exploring accessible scholarships and non-employment-based learning opportunities on and off campus.
  • Utilize counseling skills to advise immigrant students on personal, academic, career, and financial issues related to immigration status concerns and make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Support LifeMap and Advising with advising and course registration assistance during peak registration periods.
  • Monitor and triage Immigrant Student Support Services email; respond to application, enrollment, and financial aid inquiries, connect students and their families to academic and enrollment support departments, as needed.
  • Use appropriate software, student information and communication relationship management systems to support student enrollment.

Programming and Community Engagement (30%)

  • Collaborate with Director of Immigrant Services and Admissions staff to coordinate outreach events to provide culturally responsive academic and career pathways for prospective immigrant students from local high schools and community-based organizations, including students participating in BHCC's Dual Enrollment and Early College programs.
  • Collaborate with Director of Immigrant Services to create and deliver immigration-specific programming aimed at improving student access, engagement, retention, and graduation.
  • Build collaborative relationships with other campus partners and departments to deliver intersectional programming and and support students' ability to build connections and access appropriate success services.
  • Serve as an additional advisor to all students receiving the Immigrant Achievement Scholarship (Immigrant Scholars) and provide an array of student support services including academic, career/vocational and transfer advising.
  • Participate in college meetings, community engagement, and outreach activities as needed.
  • Be a part of evening and weekend enrollment events as needed.



Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology or a closely related field, with two years of experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project development and/or management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience working with diverse students in a fast-paced student services or equivalent setting.
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with a wide range of people and groups.
  • Possess excellent intercultural and interpersonal relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in student information systems as well as MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work on weekends and evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Haitian Creole, Portuguese or Spanish.
  • Experience working with underrepresented groups.
  • Experience working at a community college, nonprofit and/or community-based organization.
  • Demonstrate understanding or willingness to learn about national, state and local immigration laws and policies that affect immigrant-origin students in Massachusetts.
  • Demonstrate understanding or willingness to learn about equity-centered and asset-based pedagogies and practices for working with immigrant-origin students.
