Job Description:
This role is responsible for operational risk oversight activities specific to a respective business line or corporate function. This includes advising, assessing, and effectively challenging all operational risks and mitigants for the specific business and their impact on both risk appetite and the goals and objectives of the business. This leader will lead a team of individual contributors and oversee the operational risk activities across the business in partnership with business line leaders, business line control leaders, and other second and third line leaders including compliance risk and internal audit. Key to the success for this critical role will be the build out and establishment of an effective second line of defense operational risk organization. This leader will work with other corporate and non-financial risk leaders and their teams to ensure the effective implementation of enterprise and operational risk programs by the business and driving the effective challenge process of these programs. Critical to success will be the development and ongoing management of an effective second line of defense including monitoring, testing, and operational risk assessments of the business to ensure effective risk management practices and strong control environment for the business. The leader will also be expected to engage with, influence, and lead business partners at all levels in the organization, escalate risks, when necessary, actively participate in governance and management committees, and effectively engage with regulators. In addition to these core oversight and advisory functions, the Senior Manager must effectively lead, engage, and develop their team to ensure success of the Operational Risk Advisory function. This leader may lead and participate in cross-team Non-Financial Risk department special projects and ad hoc analysis/reporting to senior management on operational risks. In executing these functions, the Senior Manager is expected to collaborate closely with other colleagues across Operational Risk Oversight, Non-Financial Risk Management, Corporate Risk Management, and other lines of business and corporate functions. Develops and coaches' teams to be able to identify, manage, and escalate risk, and effectively manages risk within the teams you oversee
Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team that develops and is accountable for the operational risk oversight program. Provide support, coaching, development opportunities, feedback, and counsel to all team members. Manage the development of team members by defining and assigning goals, conducting periodic coaching and feedback reviews, and administering annual performance evaluations.
  • Defines and executes the risk-based approach to independent risk assessments and oversight for the business.
  • Defines the monitoring and testing strategy to ensure effective oversight of the business and leverages the results from NFRM Testing COE to drive an effective risk and control environment for the business.
  • Execute operational risk advisory and effective challenge for programs across the Non-Financial Risk Programs.
  • Participate in and engage with business leaders in governance and management committee forums to help drive a culture of effective risk management.
  • Creates and updates status reports of program initiatives, activities, and nonfinancial risks to management and committees and escalate concerns and successes
  • Develops and coaches a team to be able to identify, manage, and escalate risk, and effectively manages risk within the teams he/she oversees.
  • Scopes and executes risk assessments in the Digital e-business technology and Marketing analytics organization. Assesses operational risk for the digital analytics, digital enhancements for the Discover website and mobile app and user experiences, digital accessibility risks and scalable digital practices for Discover's website and mobile app.
  • Assesses operational risk for the digital marketing analytics and reviews risks and controls for the coordination, implementation and optimization of Marketing strategies and associated processes, attachments, and statements in support of a variety of acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Reviews Operational Risk Events and supports assessment, updates to senior manager and reporting of the ORE events. Monitors and reviews digital operational risk KRIs and reports on breaches or elevated risk levels.
  • Maintain good relationship with business stakeholders and Business Risk Officers in the organization. Effectively challenges issues, RCSAs, controls, 1 LOD Monitoring plans, KRIs while supporting the business to maintain operational risk in the acceptable levels and risk appetite of the organization.
  • Reporting and quantitative/qualitative analysis with medium to advanced Excel skills and other tools strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration and management
  • 8 + years of Law, Risk, or Operations experience
  • 5 + years of experience in first or second-line risk, control, or compliance role in a highly regulated financial institution subject to Heightened Standards.
  • In Lieu of Education Experience 12 + years of risk management experience in a highly regulated financial/depository environment with specific focus on operational risk management, internal audit, or related

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 + years of risk management experience in a financial environment with specific focus on operational risk management or internal audit or related
  • 2 + years of People Management experience.

Compensation:
The base pay for this position generally ranges between $103,000.00 to $174, Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package.
