Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives provides oversight and direction to the undergraduate, graduate and professional student residential communities. This includes a focus on the Transdisciplinary Fellows program, the Lawyers Club and supporting the development of undergraduate Theme communities. The Assistant Director will lead inclusively to engage students, faculty, Student Life partners, and academic partners to realize the vision of transdisciplinarity to create meaningful connections to students research, education and interests.
Responsibilities*
Academic Initiatives (40%)
- Design and implement a robust transdisciplinary living learning program and connection to academic programs
- Lead the development and implementation of Residence Education Community Values, aligned with the Student Life Learning outcomes and a framework of engagement across disciplines
- Organize the annual Michigan Housing Honored Instructor Event and create recognition for each instructor nominated for the award and students who participate by nominating their instructors
- Represent the department on university groups focused on graduate and professional student engagement and development, and academic partnerships
- Represent Michigan Housing in recruitment efforts to seek talented students through orientation presentations and showcasing Munger Graduate Residence and the Lawyers Club for prospective residents, campus partners, and alumni
- Establish and maintain strategic partnerships across Student Life and the University's 19 schools and colleges that foster transdisciplinary engagement in graduate and professional communities, and Theme Communities for undergraduate students
- Collaborate with Academic partners to implement agreements identified in Memorandums of Understandings
- Directly supervise the Program Manager for Graduate Academic Initiatives, Program Manager for Theme Communities, and Program Manager for the Lawyers Club. Provide indirect supervision and support to Transdisciplinary Fellows Graduate Resident Advisors and Undergraduate Theme Resident Advisors
- Oversee student engagement for residential undergraduate, graduate and professional students
- Promote engagement and participation within Michigan Housing's Theme Communities
- Coordinate with the Assistant Director for Student Staff Selection and Training to support the student staff selection process for Theme RAs, Lawyers Club RAs and the Transdisciplinary Fellows
- Advise residents, RAs and Fellows on working across disciplines, entrepreneurship, and innovation by connecting them to resources
- Meet with interested stakeholders and align their activities with the Transdisciplinary initiatives and Theme communities
- Facilitate training for all levels of staff related to inclusive leadership, academic initiatives and transdisciplinary engagement opportunities
- Create collaborative opportunities for current and future partners in the development of Theme communities
- Collaborates with other Assistant Directors for the purpose of strategic planning efforts, centralizing process, planning and implementation for an overall vision of Residence Education while maintaining, fostering and developing an engaged community experience
- Coordinate and direct the implementation of the department memorandums of understanding with Academic units for engagement and the delivery of collaborative initiatives
- Manage programming budgets intended to enhance the undergraduate and graduate residential communities
- Develop and maintain relationships with prominent donors and the Lawyers Club Boards of Governors
- Utilize assessment tools such as Sessions @ Michigan
- A Master's degree in Education, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field.
- 4 years experience working to engage students in academic initiatives
- 2 years experience with supervision and working with a diverse population.
- 2 years administrative experience in program design and implementation and/or assessment.
- Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
- Demonstrated success in creating strategic partnerships with academic partners across disciplines
- 2 years administrative experience with budgets
Position Criteria:
- Strong interpersonal communication skills in both written and spoken formats.
- Capacity to interact with and work well with diverse groups, including academic deans, directors, faculty, staff, and students.
- Utilizing knowledge of current trends in graduate multi-disciplinary student higher education
- Ability to self-direct and prioritize multiple projects using strong organizational skills
- Ability to lead and support organizational development, leadership development, and change management initiatives.
- Demonstrated skill in developing and sustaining collaborative and culturally inclusive relationships.
- This position is supervised by the Associate Director of Residence Education for Academic Connections.
- 12-month, exempt position
- Oversees the Munger transdisciplinary programming budget, the Lawyers Club Programming budget and the Theme Communities Programming budget. (Budget of $40,000 total.)
- Some evening and weekend work is required.
- This position will directly supervise three full time Program Managers.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
