The department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant position. The incumbent contributes with research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. Further, the Research Assistant performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.
  • Prepares correspondence and answers phones.

  • Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.
  • Reviews and edits various materials for publication, and prepares publication schedules.
  • Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.

Department Specific Functions

The Research Assistant position is responsible for biobanking and processing all specimens received in the laboratory under minimal supervision. This position requires independent judgment in selecting methodologies utilized in processing tissue specimens and solving routine problems. The work consists primarily of collecting, preparing, and processing all surgical and experimental specimens for further analysis. It includes slide preparation, staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and image acquisition using conventional and sophisticated confocal microscopy. The position also includes performing cellular and molecular techniques and keeping animal and IRB records. The position is responsible for maintaining the histology area by maintaining inventory and supplies, cleaning and organizing workstations, disposing of biological waste, and adhering to all compliance and operational procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in biological related sciences.
  • Three (3) years of experience in research or clinical lab.
  • Experience in histology and Immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience in conventional molecular and cellular biology techniques
  • Experience using laboratory equipment.
  • Experience calculating lab results and data using math and analytical skills.
  • Experience using MS Word and Excel. Preferred experience will include developing reports, spreadsheets, and databases using the mentioned software programs.
  • Experience entering data into an electronic system.
  • Experience purchasing and maintaining lab supplies.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining laboratories and lab equipment.
  • Experience working within an educational medical lab environment in laboratories.
