UPMC Hamot is seeking a dedicated Nursing Assistant to join the team in the OR at the Women's Hospital

Schedule
: Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM (no holidays or weekends).

Overview: In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the smooth operation of our OR. As a Nursing Assistant, you will be responsible for preparing surgical case items for the following day, setting up rooms and equipment, and performing terminal cleaning of the ORs at the end of each day. Your work in terminal cleaning is crucial in significantly reducing the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs) and maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including daily living activities such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment conducive to patient recovery, including performing safety checks, cleaning equipment, changing bed linens, and organizing patient rooms.
  • Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment to support patient care, performs messenger functions, and stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas.
  • Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
  • Performs nursing core responsibilities: blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care, restraint management, and point of care testing.
  • Provides feedback to the RN about patient care and reports any changes in patient status.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.
  • Supports safety in the workplace for both patients and staff.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.
  • Suggests and supports departmental changes and views problems as challenges.
  • Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Establishes effective communication strategies and maintains professional, respectful interpersonal relationships.
  • Contributes to unit activities, including responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provides diversional activities to prevent the use of restraints and documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Completes clerical functions as needed and complies with safety policies, including standard precautions and blood-borne pathogen exposure procedures.
  • Adheres strictly to all patient care and hospital information policies and practices.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role and provides one-on-one patient companionship/supervision as required.
  • Participates in self-review and requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, following system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
