Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this job is the identification and analysis of blood and other biological fluids through conventional serological testing and/or DNA testing on evidence submitted in criminal cases, consulting with detectives and prosecutors on the analysis of evidence, preparation of formal reports, conducting pretrial conferences and testimony as a qualified forensic expert.\r

POSITION DUTIES

Conducts analysis of biological samples using forensically accepted serological and STR/DNA techniques.\r

Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports\r
\r
\r
Conducts pretrial conferences and gives testimony in court as a qualified forensic expert in relation to procedures utilized, conclusions drawn, chain of custody and statistical analyses\r
\r
\r
Possesses a working knowledge of Laboratory SOP's. QA/QC procedures, safety manuals, special orders and security procedures\r
\r
\r
Serves as the backup for the casework laboratory technician and performs other duties as required or assigned\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:���A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science,�or related physical, natural or forensic science from an accredited college or university. \r
Experience: None. \r
Note: Candidates may substitute experience performing comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence to include experience in providing expert testimony,�on a year for year basis ,for the required education. \r

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:� Successful completion of a minimum of (3) courses in the subject areas of Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology for a total of (9) cumulative semester hours\r

Successful completion of coursework covering Statistics and/or Population Genetics\r

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.\r

1.� Forensic Science Internship\r
2.� Six months of forensic work experience\r
3.� Six months of general biology laboratory experience\r
4.� Court qualified testimony as a forensic expert\r
5.� Master's degree in same educational disciplines as required in Minimum Qualifications\r

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r
2. Candidates appointed to this classification must be eligible for or possess the certification or license required by the governing body of the forensic discipline associated with the job duties for the specific position. Specific information concerning the requirements and procedures of the applicable governing body can be obtained from the Human Resources office of the Maryland Department of State Police,1201 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD \r

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees�in this classification are subject to call-in�24 hours a day and, therefore, are required to provide the agency with a telephone�number where they can be reached. \r
2. Employees in this classification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation , Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r
3. In accordance with Public Safety Article,�Section b) (6) of the Annotated Code of Maryland, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination, submission of a DNA sample, and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate. \r

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum and selective qualifications will be considered for this classification.� It is, therefore, essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.� Successful candidates will be placed on an Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED or QUALIFIED and remain eligible for at least one year from the date of examination.� The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.�\r

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.� You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement or the rating may be based on your application.� Report all experience and education that is related to this position.� Applicants will be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and substance abuse testing.\r
