Director of Alumni and Development

The Webb School seeks an experienced professional to lead its office of Alumni and Development. The successful candidate will have significant experience in all aspects of fundraising and alumni relations in a school or university setting. This includes team management, capital campaigns, annual funds, major gifts, planned giving, special events and alumni relations. This individual will be energetic, articulate and known to be a team player and an enthusiastic proponent of the independent school experience.

The School:

Located in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, The Webb School is in its 153rd year and is home to over 400 boarding and day students. It is recognized as the longest continuously operating boarding school in the South. From its founding in 1870 by William R. "Sawney" Webb, the school has been known for its commitment to both academic excellence and personal integrity. Today's Webb School is a modern, diverse community devoted to its original mission of graduating young men and women of the highest integrity, well prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow. Integrity remains at the heart of all that we do. Our sense of community and purpose are supported by a talented and dedicated faculty and leadership team, many of whom live on our 149-acre campus in the pastoral village of Bell Buckle – an hour's drive from the booming metropolis of Nashville.

Webb recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, and offers an educational experience that honors traditions while remaining relevant for the 21st century. In his fourth year as Head of School, Ken Cheeseman has energized the campus and led it to its largest enrollment in school history. The school seeks to educate the whole student and emphasizes the three "A's": Academic, Arts and Athletics, with character above all else.

The Position:

The Director of Alumni and Development reports directly to the Head of School and serves on the Senior Leadership Team. She or he will oversee all aspects of fundraising for the school, partnering with the Head, trustees, leadership team, faculty, staff, and volunteers in that work. This individual will be a strategic thinker who acts collaboratively and nimbly – and serves as an inspiring spokesperson for the school. The Alumni and Development Office has successfully completed two comprehensive campaigns since 2010. From , Moving our Tradition Forward focused on capital projects and received $11.1M in gifts and pledges ($10M goal). In 2018, as part of the 150th anniversary, the school embarked on a 36-month Webb 150 Campaign that focused on endowment and received $5.6M ($4.0M goal) in gifts, pledges and documented bequests. The school has raised more than $700,000 so far in the annual fund.

With its new record enrollment, the School is in the beginning planning stages for an ambitious campaign that will provide new facilities that will enhance the educational experience for all of the members of the Webb community.

Key Responsibilities


• Responsible for all aspects of Webb School's fundraising and alumni relations.

• Serves as a key partner to the Head of School.

• Provides oversight and management for the upcoming capital campaign

• With the Head, sets realistic but ambitious goals for fundraising at Webb, and devises methods and strategies to achieve those goals.

• Supervises the Associate Director of A&D, partnering with him to manage, mentor and build a strong, enthusiastic team – and hit ambitious goals

• Works with the Associate Director to significantly increase the Webb Fund.

• Builds upon and strengthens planned giving efforts at Webb. (The Burkhead Society)

• With the A&D staff, manages and oversees special events.

• Works closely with the Development Committee of the board.

• Devises and oversees a strong stewardship program

• Participates fully in the life of The Webb School, attending functions, special events, assemblies and related activities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred.
Fundraising experience in a school or university.
A track record of developing and implementing effective and successful fundraising programs.
Demonstrated ability in team building.
Campaign experience in a sophisticated shop.
Outstanding communication skills and comfort with public speaking.
Well-versed in contemporary fundraising methods, including social media.
Understands the importance of building and mentoring staff – and relishes this role.
Well versed in all aspects of cultivating, soliciting and closing major gifts.
Experience in coordinating cultivation and solicitation calls with major prospects for school leadership – including trustees.
A commitment to diversity – in all of its aspects.
Experience in developing strong professional relationships with donors, alumni, parents, faculty and fellow administrators.
Significant record as a team player.
