TITLE OF POSITION: Health/Mental Health/Nutrition Specialist

This position is organized into three major areas of responsibility with the duties detailed under each area. The position description is the basis for classification and pay, recruitment and selection, and performance appraisal. The Health/Mental health/Nutrition Specialist Supervisor will review this position description with the employee upon hiring. The Order of the Fisherman Ministry Head Start Administration may revise this description if there are substantial changes in the duties or if there is a need for an update.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Health/Mental Health/Nutrition Specialist manages a wide range of projects and activities designed to implement an integrated multi-faceted service delivery system that is a model of excellence. The Health/Mental Health/Nutrition Specialist is responsible for oversight of all child health and development services provided to all Early Head Start/Head Start enrollees. This position provides resources and information to parents regarding health and mental health services. The position also encourages utilization of those services to ensure all enrollees have completed medical, dental, and mental health screenings and examinations. The Health/Mental Health/Nutrition Specialist also monitors the compliance of screenings through the agency's data management system (Child Plus) and coordinates services in collaboration with local clinics and community agencies to ensure families are maximizing resources needed for their children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Consistently monitor the sites for health, dental and mental health services including physicals and well-baby visits, health screenings, dental examinations, classroom and child observations, referrals and follow-up (as needed).
  • Conduct site visits to all sites to review lesson plans, observe teaching staff and adult/child interactions.
  • Complete random health and safety checklist bi-monthly at each site.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, universities, and colleges to provide quality service delivery processes for health and mental health services.
  • Keep abreast of developments and research in the professional area and generates recommendations for improvements in service delivery based upon information received.
  • Participates on the City-wide Detroit Health Services Advisory Committee Meeting.
  • Actively participates in collaborations with community agencies and develops collaborative agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, and/or contracts to assist in service delivery and improvement of service quality.
  • Actively participates in regular staff team meetings or other agency meetings as required.
  • Provide community resources to staff and families as needed.
  • Conduct and/or organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions as needed.
  • Attend meetings and trainings, as needed, to keep abreast of trends in each of the service areas.
  • Participate in staffing and other team meetings to support staff on the emotional, social, and health needs of children and their families.
  • Coordinates activities with the Partners and other Content Specialist to ensure that parents and volunteers are taught about child development/management, nutrition, physical and mental health, and dental education, as well as the use of community services.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
