Summary The Medical Instrument Technician(GI) (MIT/GI) assists the practitioner in endoscopic procedures within the Gastroenterology (GI) specialty practice area in which health-care staff provide care to patients with known or suspected gastrointestinal problems who are undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic treatment or procedures.

The MIT/GI ensure proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and reprocess endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME).

Responsibilities The MIT duties include the following:

Assists the practitioner in endoscopic procedures including, but not limited to; esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), bronchoscopy, endoscopic bronchial ultrasound (EBUS), Manometry, PH, Capsule Endoscopy, Fibroscan, and facility specific specialty procedures.

The MIT/GI is responsible for the procedure room set-up and tear-down, specimen Collection and assisting the doctors and nurses during endoscopy procedures.

Room set-up involves choosing appropriate scope and accessories for the upcoming case, assuring they are properly connected to processors, etc.

Stocking the room so all needed supplies are at hand and the case runs smoothly. Performs cleaning and stocking of the procedure rooms, cabinets/drawers, video stand, and monitors. Maintains stock items in procedure rooms and procedure carts and stocks medication in proper areas. Cleans and maintains gurneys, having oxygen, Ambu Bag in placed ready for every case.

Collects, processes, and labels all specimens; trains other technicians in basic and advanced endoscopic procedures; works in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assists the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, reporting changes in clinical statues, and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records.

Assures procedure reports are completed and documented in CPRS as soon as possible after interpretation. Reprocess and maintain specialty critical reusable medical equipment (RME), following approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and universal precautions.

Coordinate and carry out day-to-day operations of the GI Laboratory and procedures and other tasks related to the efficiency of the unit.

Coordination involves effective teamwork and communication regarding all aspects of the care delivery process to ensure safety and efficiency. Provides technical support and assist with post-procedure equipment care. Responsible to label verify, log and transport pathology specimens to the lab.

Responsible for setting up and assessing proper functioning of equipment by Following manufacturer's guidelines for testing prior to procedures, assuring that the equipment is working and ready for each procedure.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting in the placement of esophageal/biliary/pancreatic stents, sphincterotomy, lithotripsy, stone removal.

Coordinates equipment repairs and safety checks as needed, arranges for loaner equipment when appropriate, makes appropriate recommendations regarding repairing/replacing equipment, and maintains documentation of equipment repair expenditures and safety checks in the absence of the Lead Technician.

Prepares patients for procedures and room turnover activities, including proper Patient position during the procedure and attaching monitoring devices. Provides direct patient care under the supervision of RN in the pre-op and Discharge recovery area. Assists with cleaning, disinfecting, and preparing gurneys and direct patient care equipment to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Collaborates with Biomedical to maintain, evaluate, troubleshoot, and facilitate on Site adjustments for all technical equipment and accessories (i.e., electro cautery devices, patient monitors, video systems and components), as well as investigating multiple systems equipment links to achieve desired clinical outcomes.

Attends in-services/meetings with company representatives/vendors for new equipment or as needs arise. The MIT/GI Tech is competent in the use and maintenance of all GI equipment.

Gastroenterology (GI)

Technicians assist the practitioner in endoscopic procedures, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGO), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound. The technicians ensure proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and reprocess endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME). Certification is offered by the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) for level one and level two training. GI endoscope reprocessing certification is offered through the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Basic Developmental Levels GS-4 Experience.

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled.

Six months of this experience may have been in medically related fields such as nursing assistant, practical nursing, or similar fields.

The remaining six months must have been in operating diagnostic and therapeutic equipment covered by this occupation. Experience gained in the operation of equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited at this level. OR, Education.

Successful completion of two years of education above high school or an associate's degree with a major field of study directly related to the medical instrument technician occupation.

GS-5 Experience.

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled.

This would be experience in operating equipment related to the particular specialization for which application is made or in related functional areas.

Experience gained in the operation of equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited through this grade level. OR, Education.

Successful completion of [4 academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, or] a bachelor's degree in a major field of study appropriate to medical instrument technician functions.

GS-6 Experience.

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
GS-7 GI Technician (Full Performance Level) Experience.

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled.

This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. Assignment. This represents the full performance level.

Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique.

They collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records.

They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit.

Physical Requirements:
Extended (long) periods of standing, bending, and walking. Lifting of heavy equipment and/or patients.

Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and turning weights ranging from a 10 pounds piece of equipment up to, but not limited to, the potential for a patient weighing greater than 400 pounds.

Supporting/exerting sustained physical "pressure" for up to ten minutes at a time. Involves excellent visual acuity, auditory acuity, above average agility and manual dexterity. Wearing of personal protective equipment including continual use of face shields and masks (any respiratory conditions may interfere). Repetitive physical motions for long-periods of time utilizing, but not limited to, hands, arms, fingers, neck, back, and legs. The position may require incumbent to perform duties while wearing radioactive protective clothing (lead) for long periods of time.

The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.

The incumbent may be exposed to chemicals during reprocessing of equipment. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
