The Team

The Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp. has its mission to provide a full range of services to our primary client base - U.S. Government agencies and departments. With the unique skill sets we have developed during the 100-plus years of service to our U.S. Government agencies client base, we are able to provide one-of-a-kind solutions to complex mission objectives that arise out of specific challenges faced by and unique to these agencies. Our primary areas of focus are: Architecture/Engineering (A/E) Services, Defense Program, Design/Build, Classified, and Environmental.

The Opportunity

As a Lead Electrical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Independently applyadvanced engineering techniques to develop and execute microgrid projects from feasibility analysis through commissioning.
  • Review and analyze engineering solutions to various power system, microgrid or transmission and distribution engineering issues.
  • Assigned to projectsfor U.S. Government Agency and Department clients. This role requires US Citizenship and ability to obtain US Security Clearance.
  • Directly contribute toglobal projects and missions, including Domestic (US based), Pacific and European locations.
  • Function as a technical specialist and/orlead over multiple projects and teams in the Federal Sector.
  • May supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as Specialist providing knowledge and expertise.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers.

This is a HYBRID opportunity with expected requirements of three days in office per week. Candidates located near anymay be considered. Preference may be made for candidates located in Arlington, VA; Overland Park, KS (Kansas City); Denver, CO; Raleigh, NC; Orlando, FL.

Key Responsibilities

Project Discipline Lead

  • Reviews lower-level engineering work or assignments for accuracy, clarity, and coordination.
  • Collaborates with clients, subcontractors, end users and design assist subcontractors as the B&V electrical representative.
  • Briefs stakeholders on technical aspects of multi-facility power systems project development and execution.
  • Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on complex projects.
  • Provides hands-on mentorship to discipline and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Provides support for construction phase services including the response to RFIsand the review of construction submittals against the design specifications and drawings.
  • Manages assigned budgets, schedules, and quality requirements. Establishes project work plans.
  • Collaborates with team/client stakeholders (including high-ranking military officials) on conceptual designs, design reviews, etc.
  • Responsible for overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work.
  • Serves as responsible engineer in charge for a project.

Engineering Production

  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Creates concept and detailed power systems design deliverablesfor complex projects or programs; produces design calculations, drawings, specifications, and design analysis.
  • Plans and conducts independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Supports development and execution of microgrid projects from feasibility analysis through commissioning.
  • Coordinates with a BIM team for drawing production; redline documents within Bluebeam.
  • Leads writing for programming documentation throughout execution.
  • Evaluates and assesses feasibility of the implementation of large-scale energy project opportunities, provide engineering, and technical analysist for problem definition, requirements development, and implementation of complex systems such as smart grids, microgrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, diesel and natural gas generators, and alternative energy generation systems in the engineering disciplines required to meet technical requirements.

Client Focus

  • Responsible for assisting with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects
  • Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology

  • Recognized as a technical specialist by the division having in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of an industry
  • Designs a complete project of complex scope within an assigned practice area(s)

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Provides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies.
  • Assists in developing, maintaining and updating quality/engineering standards.
  • May provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
  • Travel to client review meetings and site visits as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Assigned to projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.

Technical experience to also include planning, design and construction oversight in several of the following specialties:

  • Mission critical power and controls
  • Low and medium voltage power distribution
  • Substation Design
  • Microgrids, including primary/backup diesel and natural gas generators, UPS systems, solar photovoltaic (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS), fuel cells, etc.
  • Interconnection studies and applications with utility companies
  • Electrical studies and power system modeling including load flow, short-circuit, protection & coordination, transient stability, harmonics analysis and time domain load flow. Power system modeling experience using ETAP, SKM, PSSE, or PSLF.
  • Power quality management.
  • Design-bid-build and Design-Build contract types
Other qualifications include
  • Experience working for an entity of the Federal government; familiarity with the applicable unified facilities guide specifications and criteria, ability to use SpecsIntact or Dr. Checks
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering with a power emphasis or demonstrated experience in power system design.
  • Active US security clearance, or ability to obtain one
