Description:

The School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a dynamic leader to serve as visiting associate or full professor of choral conducting. This is a full-time, one-year appointment as visiting associate or full professor, depending on experience, beginning fall 2024. This position will be located on the ASU Tempe campus.

The successful candidate for the position will demonstrate excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will provide leadership for the ASU choral program that will help to increase the national and international reputation of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Leadership for the program includes collaborative development of initiatives and working with students to reexamine and reimagine the role of choral music in the 21st century. The successful candidate will:

conduct on-campus rehearsals and concerts for the choral program;
connect in meaningful ways with public school educators and ensembles;
serve as a teacher and mentor for aspiring conductors at the upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels;
co-manage the choral program budget and administrative responsibilities;
work collaboratively with conducting faculty on purposeful event scheduling.
Further responsibilities will include assisting in recruiting undergraduate and graduate students regionally and nationally; teaching graduate conducting seminars in conjunction with the instrumental conducting faculty, advanced choral literature and rehearsal techniques courses, and other courses depending upon the candidate's interests and experience; and mentoring and assisting students as they pursue their professional goals. The successful candidate will also work effectively with the administration in service of the mission of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in choral conducting or related field.
National and/or international conducting experience.
Evidence of successful choral music teaching at the collegiate level or in other educational contexts.
Experience administering (budget, schedule, etc.) and directing a choral program at the collegiate, professional or festival level.
Commitment to advancing the ASU Charter and Design Aspirations.
Desired Qualifications:
Candidates should provide evidence of demonstrated ability in one or more of these areas:

Teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level university students in choral ensembles and advanced conducting coursework.
Exemplary pedagogical skills and knowledge.
Demonstrated ability to provide pedagogical and musical leadership in music beyond the Western European tradition (e.g. community-based music, improvisation, new and emerging ensembles, popular/contemporary music, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, or Latin-American genres) and in gender inclusivity.
Interdisciplinary collaborative and creative activity across disciplines within and outside of the arts and in the community.
Multidisciplinary performances and creative programming.
Developing curriculum and pedagogy in choral repertoire and conducting.
Teaching or interacting with secondary school music programs.
