GI RCS System Support Specialist – ISP2A

This is a junior system administrator and service desk position. It includes administering Linux servers and/or performing Windows and Mac desktop support and working directly with researchers (faculty, staff, and graduate students) to answer their questions and support their computing, storage, and hosting needs. Located at the Geophysical Institute, the Research Computing Systems group performs internal research IT support for the GI and hosts research cyberinfrastructure services available to all UAF research entities.

This role requires someone who is highly interested in a wide range of technologies and helping use them in a variety of research activities. We are looking for someone who can work directly (in-person, over the phone, or via email) with researchers daily to answer questions, troubleshoot issues, and help them use IT systems and services in their research. Somebody who knows or is willing to learn Linux systems administration will be very successful. Systems programming and scripting provide plenty of opportunities for somebody to become an expert in automating systems, services, and configuration management. Experience with high-performance computing and large data storage is applicable. Writing and editing technical documentation for other team members and researchers is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (i.e., Information Technology or other related field) and two years experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, term-funded staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package . UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule , Grade 79, based on education and experience.
