HAVO RESTORATION PROJECT SUPERVISOR – ID#

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), with the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO), located in Volcano, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,900/Mon.

DUTIES: Oversees HAVO's restoration program. Plans, recommends and directs field activities related to nursery management, seed collection, propagation, planting, site restoration and monitoring. Grows common, rare, threatened and endangered plants in the HAVO greenhouse/nursery, controls pest species. Oversees PCSU Restoration Project staff, including interns and volunteers. Coordinates and leads service projects with park visitors, community groups, and schools. Oversees the outplanting of native plants in designated sites determined by work plans and guidelines. Prepares planting sites using manual and chemical methods (herbicide) and plants in designated sites. Monitors effectiveness of outplantings through the growth, survival, reproduction, and community vegetation change. Maintains records of propagation techniques, lineage of all plants, and control measures. Collects, processes and stores native seeds according to the best available research. Prepares Restoration/Outplanting Plans for native and culturally significant species recovery, plant community restoration, or landscaping. Serves as the safety officer for the Restoration Project. Ensures field and nursery staff adhere to SOPs and JHAs. Tracks and maintains records of staff safety certifications and coordinates relevant trainings. Ensures safe practices are maintained in the field.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Botany, Horticulture, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of experience in natural resource management, Hawaiian ecosystem research, landscaping, or nursery work. At least one (1) year of experience planning and implementing resource management projects in Hawai'i. At least one (1) year of experience supervising or performing as the lead to subordinates (experience can be unrelated).

KNOWLEDGE

Proficient knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and plant propagation and seed storage. Proficient knowledge of identification, propagation, and outplanting of rare, threatened, and endangered plant species in Hawai'i. Proficient knowledge of pesticide mixing, use, and safety. Working knowledge of word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to recognize and identify rare and endangered plants. Ability to navigate with compass and maps. Ability to work alone in remote situations. Ability to communicate well with supervisor and co-workers orally and in writing. Ability to organize work. Strong organizational/record-keeping skills. Ability to be highly detailed oriented. Ability to operate all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and utility task vehicle (UTV). Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete an ATV/UTV safety certification course within six (6) months of hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain State of Hawai'i Restricted Pesticide Applicators Certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must complete helicopter safety (A100) training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. If selected for use of chainsaws, must submit chainsaw training certification to PCSU prior to activity.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. Able to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Proficient in ArcGIS and using global positioning systems (GPS) to navigate and record locations.
