Pediatric Audiology Externship

The Center for Childhood Communication (CCC) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) commits to being the world leader in helping children reach their full potential by delivering integrated family–centered clinical care, innovative research and quality education in childhood communication and its disorders.

The CCC offers an Au.
D. externship each year, beginning on or about July 1st and ending on or about June 30th.

When considering candidates, we look for bright, motivated individuals who have experience working with pediatric patients, with the desire to become pediatric audiologists.

We have a large staff (~40 audiologists) and our clinical setting is demanding and fast-paced.

Externs are provided with supervision by experienced pediatric audiologists with either ASHA CCC-A or ABA Board Certification in Audiology, in addition to the state license in audiology.

Supervision from an audiologist with the ASHA CCC-A is available but not guaranteed.

Responsibilities include directly supervised audiological assessment, aural rehabilitation, and equipment calibration.

The extern also participates in the ongoing development, revision, and refinement of clinical procedures and protocols, and is involved in the department's research program.

The extern participates in and completes the requirements for the hospital's interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program.

Appointment as an extern is for one year (12 months) with no guarantee of employment by CHOP beyond the one-year extern appointment.


Bachelor's Degree is required. Applicant must be currently enrolled in a Clinical Doctorate (Au.
D.) program in Audiology, with all requirements met for the degree with the exception of the Au.
D. externship. High level of skill in various audiological assessment and treatment procedures pertaining to the pediatric population. Fundamental research skills including a general understanding of research methodology, design, and statistics.

All CHOP employees who work in a patient building or who provide patient care are required to receive an annual influenza vaccine unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption.

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
-Clinical experiences are customized to meet the needs and interests of each extern.

  • Experiences may include behavioral assessment, physiologic assessment, amplification selection/verification/validation, cochlear implant services, vestibular evaluations, inpatient consultations, family support groups, and more.
  • Our externship also includes a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) fellowship.
