The Director of Digital Learning and Literacy will be responsible for creating and implementing a vision for the school's library and digital learning initiatives for students in 6th through 12th grade. The Director will create, oversee, and implement a 21st-century information-sharing and collaboration strategy and space for Newark Academy. We seek to expand the traditional library experience to include digital/blended learning, student agency, and experiential learning.

The Director of Digital Learning and Literacy will ensure and support creative and effective use of the learning commons, technologies, and opportunities for innovation, in order to serve the needs of the school community. This individual will create a culture and space that is academic, social, and innovative. Successful candidates will have a background in or working knowledge of: innovation and entrepreneurship, aspects of library and information science, information and communication technology, academic technology, design learning, classroom education, student life, and leadership.

Reports to: Director of Technology and Media Services

Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute a short, mid, and long-term vision for the future of libraries and digital learning at Newark Academy.
  • Develop a vision for digital learning and information literacy in teaching and learning.
  • Drive the development and adoption of innovative and effective uses of educational technology and library resources.
  • Assess technology and library resource needs of faculty and staff and provide necessary professional development to meet those needs.
  • Promote the use of information literacy and communications technologies to support differentiated learning.
  • Consider social ways to ensure that the learning commons becomes a comfortable, warm, and exciting place for students to gather, learn, explore, and create.
  • Develop standards to evaluate the skills and knowledge that students will need to become effective and responsible citizens in a digital society.
  • Work with department chairs and grade-level deans to implement conversations about digital citizenship and digital ethics into other subject areas.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Equity and Inclusion, promote our school's Community Commitments to Belonging via the displays, bulletins, programs, resources, and decor.
  • Develop programming to help students in MS and US avoid the many forms of plagiarism.
  • Supervise and support the work of the digital learning and literacy team.
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Technology and Media Services and other members of the department.
  • Work with the IT Department to select, purchase, test, and implement new technologies as necessary.
  • Support faculty and staff through weekly meetings, and regular meetings with individual teachers.
  • Manage the library in terms of staffing, equipment, and any purchases, upgrades or repairs necessary. Manage coverage of the circulation desk and fill in as needed.
  • Manage the budgets for the library and digital learning departments and approve purchases.
    • Master's degree in technology, information science or related field (preferred)
    • 3-5 years of related experience, preferably in an educational setting
    • Experience working with and supporting a diverse community of students, parents, and colleagues
    • Strong customer service orientation; tactful, patient, and courteous
    • Demonstrated time management skills; ability to prioritize support requests, work on multiple tasks with minimal supervision, and escalate support requests as necessary to ensure that all issues are resolved within acceptable timeframes
    • Exemplary attention to detail and strong organizational skills; ability to correlate multiple issues and identify systematic problems
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the proven ability to work with a variety of constituents; ability to explain technical details to users at various levels of comfort and expertise
    • Availability to occasionally work before and after school, evenings and on weekends This is a full-time, 10-month position (8/15-6/15). Salary commensurate with experience.
