Day - 08 Hour (United States of America)The Stanford Medicine Technology and Digital Solutions team was formed to provide the Stanford Medicine community with the most innovative technology services as efficiently as possible. Led by Michael Pfeffer, CIO and Michael Halaas, Chief Operating Officer and Associate Dean in the School of Medicine, the unified organization brings together the best of the School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care IT to enable new opportunities for groundbreaking work and compassionate care. Together, the Technology and Digital Solutions team will work to break down historic organizational barriers to enable even greater collaboration across Stanford Medicine hospital and clinics, and the entire University.This is a Stanford Health Care job.

A Brief Overview
The Infrastructure Cabling Engineer is a technical resource responsible for SHC's outside and inside cabling/pathway infrastructure and telecommunication spaces design, standards, quality control, implementation, maintenance, and capacity planning. This includes but not limited to reviewing cabling infrastructure designs and scopes of work, providing technical support and monitoring telecommunications construction activities to ensure compliance with SHC-IT standards.

Excellent structured cabling/pathway, engineering/design and project management skills are required to balance both infrastructure integrity and project deliverables to ensure the cabling infrastructure supports technically advanced telecommunication services. Candidates must have proficient time management skills to work in a dynamic operations environment with varying priorities and schedule demands. Excellent communications skills are required for collaboration with technical and non-technical individuals at all levels inside and outside of Stanford Healthcare.

Additional responsibilities include overseeing the development of and operation of Move/Add/Change (MAC) activities throughout all SHC facilities.

What you will do
  • Collaborate with the network operations team, network architecture team, facilities team and planning, design & construction team in the development of infrastructure design and provide budgetary cost estimate plans for inside and outside cabling/pathways and spaces.
  • Ensure that all infrastructure designs in compliance with both Industry and SHC standards within allocated budgets. Designs will include (but not limited to) telecommunications rooms and spaces, inside and outside cabling to new buildings, existing buildings and data centers.
  • Oversee and maintain capacity planning, cable record management of outside and inside cabling both copper and fiber and outside pathways. Implement software tools and databases for tracking MAC activity and cabling inventory.
  • Review and create documentation for infrastructure design and scopes of work to be used as bid documents and reference materials. Actively participate in design meetings for new buildings, data centers, and renovations and approve cabling scopes of work in these areas.
  • Attend meetings with outside contractors, architects, engineering firms, and SHC support departments. Participate in job walks pre-construction and ongoing construction meetings on a regular basis.
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance plans for the fiber and copper cabling outside infrastructure and update documentation (including standards) on a quarterly basis. Create new documentation and replace existing documentation, as needed.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with technical operational staff with cabling activities including (but not limited to) the following telecommunications areas: moves, changes, additions, and repairs.
  • Work closely with outside contractors to repair damaged cabling resulting in telecommunications services outages and develop solutions to minimize future outages.
  • Schedule and coordinate outside contractors for preventative repairs to minimize telephone and network outages. Coordinate planned and unplanned infrastructure outages with SHC departments. Work closely with outside telecommunications providers for services to SHC.
  • Provide written status reports to senior management on a regular basis. Develop communication plans for future and current infrastructure upgrades that may or may not affect telecommunications services.
  • Develop and maintain a document repository to store all facility design and construction drawings/specifications, test results and warranty information.
  • Oversee and coordinating contractor activities, providing quality assurance and inspections for SHC projects requiring cabling performed by outside contractors, vendors, and/or SHC departments.
  • Ensure that the cabling complies with SHC and Industry standards and codes. Actively participate in updating SHC standards.
  • Review cabling scopes of work and collaborate with Project Managers in establishing target dates for requested deliverables from others.
  • Provide guidance and technical expertise operational staff and other departments. Troubleshoot and resolve any problems that may arise with the infrastructure and offer alternate solutions to senior management and field support staff.
  • Verify cabling materials and parts utilized meets or exceed industry/SHC standards by inspecting materials on job sites and performing periodic field inspections in conjunction with the field support staff.
  • Stay informed about short and long-range plans for new buildings, renovations, remodels, and departmental moves requiring telecommunications infrastructure, develop action plans based on these findings and actively engage SHC technical and operational staff about these plans.
  • Review schedules and project deliverables with Project Managers and assist Project Managers and Senior Management to identify SHC resources for projects.
  • Provide and review information for estimates SHC-IT department. Coordinate resources with outside contractors, vendors, telecommunication providers and SHC departments to meet project deadlines and milestones.
  • In conjunction with SHC Project Managers, set realistic expectations with clients and keep them informed of the implementation activities on projects, upgrades and repairs.

Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
Experience Qualifications
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
  • Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI) Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification holder or candidate in the process of acquiring RCDD certification. Candidate must acquire certification within 12 months from the date of hire.
  • OSHA10 Certified
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Trained in Telecommunications Cabling Installation Codes and Standards
  • Trained in Grounding and Bonding Principles
  • Trained in Cable Installation Safety
  • Working knowledge of Outside Plant industry guidelines and standards and codes.
  • Proven experience as a communications planner with extensive background in telecommunications infrastructure planning and design, and the ability to communicate the plans and concepts to all levels of personnel, management, and contractors.
  • Proven experience with telecommunications and network infrastructure to include: an understanding of terms, concepts, inside and outside fiber and copper cabling, communications cabling infrastructure design, cost estimation, industry standards and codes, and telephone systems and data network equipment.
  • Ability to design, estimate costs, develop scope of work, specify materials, and oversee the implementation of intra and inter-building communications cabling infrastructure to include the construction and modification of pathways and spaces, and all types of copper and fiber cable and termination devices.
  • In depth and applied understanding of industry standards for communications cabling systems, electrical systems, communications pathways and spaces, and for general construction.
  • Proven skills in reading and interpreting maps, blueprints, and electrical plans.
  • Project management skills: planning, estimating, budgeting, leading technical teams in projects, scheduling, coordinating, communicating, documenting, etc. required to manage multiple large telecommunications projects.
  • Problem solving skills to identify complex problem areas and service requirements, and to develop innovative solutions.
  • Analytical skills required for evaluating projects, performing needs assessment, estimating costs, managing a budget, prioritizing workload, etc.
  • Proven ability to work independently and to manage time to meet deadlines in an environment of changing priorities, and frequent interruptions.
  • Customer service skills and strong interpersonal/conflict resolution skills.
  • Written and verbal communication skills required in order to provide information and reports in a clear, concise and logical manner. Proven ability to present written and verbal communications to upper management.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people as an individual contributor, a team leader, and as a team member to achieve the goals of the department.
  • Strong computer literacy and proficient using Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.
  • Be extremely familiar with and have working knowledge of California Building Codes, Electrical Codes, Fire Protection Codes, and any other applicable codes and standards required to meet objectives.
