Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

The intern will support the development of fundamental understanding of the property-structure relationship in glass and glass-ceramic materials with a focus on thermal and mechanical properties. The intern will conduct experiments for microstructural optimization, design test plans for understanding of mechanical performance; and explore new ways to achieve desired material attributes. In addition to experimentation, the intern will be responsible for interpretation of experimental data; comparing with literature results; and writing/presenting a final report.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

This summer internship position will deal with studies in fundamental and applied glass science and technology. The intern will perform suitable background literature searches and execute on a research plan. The intern will be required to document the results of the research by the end of the summer and give a presentation to the Glass Research department at Corning.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • 40 hrs/week; 8am-5pm

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

  • The candidate will ideally be pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Geology/Geophysics, Material Science, or Chemical Engineering, but other candidates may be considered.
  • Strong technical fundamentals in material science, chemistry, and/or physics.
  • Ability to apply those skills to develop a hypothesis and an experimental plan to test Analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and interact with team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. skills; ability to effectively present information.
  • Flexibility - Able to change and adjust smoothly as the situation demands.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

  • Materials science knowledge / experience Mechanical testing knowledge / experience
  • Optical knowledge / experience Glassy materials knowledge / experience

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

  • Must be able to learn quickly and communicate effectively. Self-starter, willing to own workstream.

​The range for this position is $1, $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
