Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins'
focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a
national and global leader in higher education. We create and
foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and
philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine;
strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors,
alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and
patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model that
includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid
work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3-4 days per
week.

The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated
development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that
comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical
departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of
Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission of
patient care, research, and education through securing
philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni
relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM
partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and
clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in
JHM's work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.

The Executive Director of Development for the Department of
Medicine will plan, manage and coordinate all private sector
fundraising in support of the research, teaching and patient care
mission of the Department of Medicine as well as oversight for the
development efforts of the Center for Innovative Medicine and the
development team for the Heart and Vascular Institute.

This position will also oversee a team of approximately 13
individuals and is responsible for comprehensive development
efforts leading to successful annual and campaign fundraising
results. The Executive Director will coordinate all fundraising
activities in consultation with the Associate Vice President, Chair
of the Department of Medicine, division directors, faculty,
department administrators, and the Development and Alumni Relations
(DAR) team.

This position will have a dual reporting relationship to the
Associate Vice President of Development of the Fund for Johns
Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) and to the Chair, Department of Medicine.
The Executive Director will also be an active member of the
Department of Medicine Chair's leadership team, the Fund for Johns
Hopkins Medicine Director of Development Leadership Team and DAR
Management team.
Key responsibilities:

Partner directly with the Chair of the Department of Medicine
to establish strategies and priorities for the development activity
for the 18 divisions within the Department of Medicine.
Lead planning for and implementation of the next comprehensive
fundraising campaign for the Department of Medicine (as part of the
Hopkins-wide campaign) anticipated to publicly launch in
approximately fall 2025.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research,
teaching, and patient care components of the Department of Medicine
and its 18 divisions.
Create strategy for and articulate fundraising priorities,
goals and objectives. Develop an annual and long-range operating
plan to allow for implementation of the vision and strategy.
Provide oversight of five volunteer boards that include the
Center for Innovative Medicine, Osler Advisory, Lyme Center,
Rheumatology and Heart & Vascular Institute Boards.
Participate in administrative and faculty meetings within the
department, as well as, participating in leadership and team
meetings at the FJHM and DAR. Serve committees for the Department,
FJHM and DAR as needed.
Coordinate access and utilization of Central resources such as
gift planning, principal prospects and trustee support and
research. Partner with development colleagues on donors/prospects
with multiple affiliations.
Plan, implement, and manage a principal and major gift
fund-raising program to meet departmental priorities as identified
below:
Create annual fundraising work
plans for individual fundraisers and the team that includes
fundraising goals and targets for proposals to be presented,
faculty referrals and visits planned, in accordance with
institutional standards.
Maintain an active portfolio of
approximately 50 prospects and engage directly in major and
principal gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of
individuals, foundations and corporation
Strategically plan and execute on-site
and off-site meetings and cultivation/-recognition events
cultivation and stewardship visits with faculty and the
major/principal gift donors and prospects.
Prepare principal and major gift
solicitation strategies, proposals, solicitation letters, and other
cultivation materials. e. Identify, enlist, motivate, guide, and
support volunteers and trustees for participation in major
solicitations.
Provide education and training to
faculty and volunteers about the dynamics of major gift
fundraising.

Oversees strategy for and execution by team of all stewardship
efforts for the Department of Medicine.
Supervise and provide strategic direction to the Director of
Development, Heart and Vascular Institute, who has a dual reporting
relationship to the Ex. Director and the clinical and surgical
co-directors of the Heart and Vascular Institute in the Divisions
of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. The Director manages one
associate director and development coordinator and is responsible
for creating and implementing a development vision and strategy for
HVI that will meet the comprehensive annual and campaign goals and
increase fundraising results.
Supervise a team consisting of a combination of two Directors
of Development, Sr. Associate and/or Associate Directors of
Development and three Development Coordinators for an approximate
total staff of 13.
Prepare and manage budget for the Department of Medicine
development program and supervise the Director in doing so for the
HVI development program.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required.
At least ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in
major and principal gifts development, including at least two (2)
years of management experience required.
Superb principal and major gift ability with a solid track
record of securing seven-figure gifts.
The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, humor and
collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of
Institute chairs and faculty, chief development officers at FJHM,
development staff, development colleagues, volunteers, trustees,
and other constituents.
Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional and
multi-departmental environment to establish priorities, set
objectives and achieve stated goals.
Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to
work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a
diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to
demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
Staff management experience in a 'pro-active' organizational
environment and an ability to lead by example.
A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning,
implementation and management.
Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to
articulate and translate eloquently, the complex goals, mission and
aspirations of the programs for all audiences; clarity, crispness
and elegance in writing and speaking.
A strong desire to associate with Johns Hopkins University and
to champion the values of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in academic medicine, ideally in a complex,
multidivisional organization preferred.
Advanced degree.
