Stanford University School of Medicine’s Lane Medical Library accelerates scientific discovery, clinical care, medical education and humanities through teaching, collaboration, and delivery of biomedical and historical resources. The library is a state-of-the-art medical library within the Medical Student Education group which supports Stanford Medical Center’s research, education, and patient care objectives. Lane Library supports its mission to accelerate scientific discovery in part by curating a collection of print and digital knowledge resources relevant to the in-depth research, graduate-level education, and clinical patient care performed by the Stanford Medicine community and its affiliated hospitals and clinics. We are proud of our rich history dating back to 1882.


Job Purpose

We are looking for an assistant user-experience (UX) designer for Lane Library’s website and web products. The Assistant UX Designer will help conceive and conduct user research, interviews, and surveys, and translate findings into sitemaps, user flows, wireframes, mockups and prototypes. The person in this role will also assist in creating appealing design and layout for our Medical History Center exhibits and our various marketing materials.


Flexible Schedule: Monday - Friday; 10-15 hours per week during regular business hours from 9AM to 5PM PST.


Work Agreement: Hybrid preferred with some on-site work at Lane Medical Library, Stanford Medicine; Remote considered


Education (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and relevant experience.


Core Duties:

  • Develop usability testing strategies and collect feedback about the usability of Lane Library’s website and related web systems
  • Conduct user research to gather insights about the usability and functionality of Lane Library’s website and web products
  • Analyze usability testing and survey results to recommend improvements
  • Identify design problems and generate ideas and solutions
  • Translate concepts into user flows, wireframes, mockups and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences
  • Design and deliver wireframes, user stories, user journeys, and mockups optimized for a wide range of devices and interfaces
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
  • Design visually compelling layouts for Medical History Center exhibit panels
  • Assist with graphics for marketing materials including digital signage, blog post images, and social media posts as needed.

Qualifications Desired:

  • Pursuing a degree in Web design/UX/development/data analysis/graphic design
  • Knowledge of UX design best practices
  • Understanding of user-centered design (UCD), planning and conducting user research, user testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, and usability and accessibility concerns
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite, including XD and InDesign
  • Experience using Canva for graphic design
  • Aesthetic sense, understanding of typography, and colors, appreciation of negative space, ability to follow the branding standards
  • Portfolio and/or coursework samples
  • Some experience (classwork is acceptable) with wireframing, prototyping, card sorting, or willingness to learn independently
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Ability to work independently, quick self-learner, curious questioner, independent
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate design processes, ideas, and solutions to teams


The expected pay rate for this position is $22.19 per hour.


Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.


This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.
