Job Summary:


The Director of Design & Engineering is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the design and engineering department. This role ensures the achievement of company objectives related to design, installation, product development, and the improvement of existing product lines. The Director collaborates with senior management and serves as a liaison between the design department, project management, and operations (production).


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


- Manage and direct the professional, technical, and support staff of the Design & Engineering Department.

- Select, develop, train, and supervise staff.

- Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures that guide and support department functions.

- Manage workflow between designers and drafting personnel using Google Drive - D&E Queue.

- Oversee proposed designs and subsequent engineering for product purchases and production.

- Review and analyze proposals to determine benefits and justify expenditures.

- Act as an internal consultant to finalize project specifications.

- Lead creative sessions for project kick-offs.

- Select correct design concepts and technologies for new products or improvements.

- Direct, review, and approve product designs and changes.

- Ensure quality control over concept and fabrication drawings.

- Assist in developing estimates with the project team for bid submissions.

- Oversee and execute design packages, translating all details for installers and programmers.

- Generate wiring plans based on project scope and future needs using AutoCAD.

- Create project-specific rack elevation details, including power and thermal management calculations.

- Manage multiple drawing revisions based on change orders and as-built documents.

- Develop and maintain custom CAD infrastructure, including CAD blocks, AV Control legends, and TV detail drawings.

- Design and maintain AV, network, and integration signal flow and control diagrams.

- Work with manufacturers, AVS CTO, and operations to review and monitor quality, product improvements, and new product deployment.

- Conduct product research to validate equipment specifications.

- Provide ongoing training with industry-leading control automation solutions, including Crestron, Savant, and Lutron.


On-Jobsite Responsibilities:


- Supervise and monitor the performance of immediate support staff, providing input on hiring, disciplinary actions, and realigning work as needed.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


- Proficient in AutoCAD 2008 or later.

- Design expertise in audio, video, and networking systems.

- Competent in using personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical and general business information.

- Ability to prepare documentation, specifications, estimates, and work schedules.

Education, Certification, and Experience Required:


- Bachelor of Science Degree required.

- 5 years of design experience and advancement in audio/video and networking systems.

- 3 years of installation experience preferred.

- Crestron Digital Media Certifications.

- Savant Systems Fundamental and CORE Certified.

- Control 4 Certified.

- Supervisory experience required.
