Primary Function:

Under the direction of the Principal and Director of Special Education, I plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech, voice, or language disorders. My role includes assessing students and offering therapeutic interventions to eliminate or reduce issues that interfere with their ability to fully benefit from the educational program.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Therapy:

  • Planned and delivered individual and group therapy sessions aligned with speech and language goals outlined in Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Evaluated student progress and determined readiness for the termination of therapy services.

Assessment:

  • Conducted independent evaluations to assess students with speech or language disorders, determining eligibility for services.
  • Developed clinical management strategies, procedures, and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data.
  • Assessed students’ needs for appropriate technology to facilitate better communication.
  • Participated in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings to assist in interpreting assessment data, determining appropriate placement, and setting goals for students with communication disorders.

Consultation:

  • Counseled and involved parents in the remedial process.
  • Collaborated with classroom teachers to plan and implement activities that enhance students' communication skills.
  • Provided professional development in assigned schools, helping school personnel identify and understand communication deficits in students.
  • Communicated effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and students’ needs.

Student Management:

  • Created a learning environment conducive to student maturity levels and interests.
  • Established control and administered discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management:

  • Supervised speech therapy assistants or aides upon request.
  • Developed and coordinated the ongoing evaluation of speech-language pathology services, making adjustments based on findings.
  • Assisted in selecting equipment and instructional materials.
  • Stayed current on the knowledge and application of relevant technology.

Administration:

  • Compiled, maintained, and filed all required reports, records, and other documents.
  • Complied with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and local board policy.
  • Adhered to all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Participated in professional development activities to improve skills relevant to job assignments.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Served as a role model for all district staff.
  • Participated in approved professional development opportunities.
  • Performed other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Evaluation, habilitation, and rehabilitation of speech-language disorders.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Operation of computers and assigned software.

Ability to:

  • Utilize accepted tests and measurements to assess communication disorders.
  • Instruct and manage student behavior effectively.
  • Work independently with minimal direction.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Plan and organize work efficiently.

Education/Licenses/Experience:

Master’s degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university. Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA). One year of supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience preferred.

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent walking, standing, bending/stooping, reaching, pushing/pulling, and twisting; repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of technology hardware; regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned. Lifting 15-44 pounds; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping/crouching/kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching; prolonged use of a computer; may require lifting and transferring students to assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
