Government Relations Associate

Overview: The Government Relations Associate is a key position within Espousal Strategies, responsible for providing strategic guidance and support in all matters related to government relations. The individual in this role will work closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and government officials to advance the organization's mission and ensure effective engagement.

Primary Responsibilities:
Government Relations Strategy:
- Assist with the development and implementation of a comprehensive government relations strategy aligned with Espousal Strategies' mission and objectives.
- Identify and analyze key policy and regulatory issues that impact the organization's clients and develop strategies to address them.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and provide timely updates to the Director.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- In collaboration with internal teams, build and maintain relationships with government officials, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders at the local, regional, and national levels.
- Represent Espousal Strategies, its clients in meetings, hearings, and public forums, effectively advocating for client positions and priorities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure government relations activities align with overall organizational goals.
Policy Advocacy:
- Conduct research and analysis on policy issues relevant to Espousal Strategies' mission and work products.
- Prepare position papers, briefing materials, and policy recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Engage in grassroots advocacy efforts, including mobilizing supporters and coordinating advocacy campaigns.
Legislative and Regulatory Support:
- Monitor legislative and regulatory activities at all levels of government that impact Espousal Strategies’ clients.
- Track relevant bills, regulations, and policy initiatives, and provide analysis of their potential impact on clients.
- Work collaboratively with legal and compliance teams to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Government Affairs Communications:
- Develop and implement effective communication strategies to engage and inform government officials and policymakers.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, testimony, and written communications to convey Espousal Strategies' client positions and priorities.
- Assist in the drafting and editing of public statements, press releases, and other external communications related to government relations.
Other Responsibilities:
- Provide the Government Relations team with on-going reports on government relations progress and plans, on at least a weekly basis.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of government structures, legislative processes, and regulatory frameworks. Preference for Portland-Metro regional advocacy/lobbying and or/ Oregon legislature.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, in a persuasive and collaborative manner.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with government officials and key stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and provide sound advice and guidance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines and output quality work.
- Ability to accurately research and disseminate information.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and be self-directed.
- Cooperative & collaborative team member. Ability to communicate in a professional and respectful manner with all clients, co-workers, stakeholders, community members, public officials, and other business partners.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude in the office regarding work assignments, teamwork, and company mission.
- Proficient in standard office procedures, software, and communications technology.
- Passion for the principals of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the mission of Espousal Strategies.
Required Work Experience:
Minimum 3 - 5 years’ proven experience in government relations, public affairs, or a related field, with specific experience successfully researching, developing, and implementing sound strategies.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Work is usually performed in an indoor office environment, or remote home office environment, with long periods at a desk. Work is oriented to community service and subject to constant work interruptions. Position requires the employee to regularly facilitate meetings and deliver presentations in both small and large groups. Employees may work under the stress of continual contact from clients, community members, co-workers and business partners, and the pressure to meet deadlines. Requires flexible work schedule and may be required to work evenings and weekends. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Position may require the ability to travel regionally for work activities.
