About the Job
BerQ RNG is hiring a full-time Plant Operator Lead responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the plant, ensuring efficient and safe operation of equipment and systems, and leading a team of plant operators. This role includes monitoring production processes, maintaining equipment, adhering to safety regulations, and coordinating with other departments to ensure plant efficiency and compliance with environmental and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process control, equipment operation, and safety protocols, with a passion for maintaining high standards of performance and efficiency.

Responsibilities
System Monitoring and Control
- Utilize SCADA and HMI systems to oversee all plant processes, ensuring accurate and real-time data monitoring
- Continuously monitor the performance of critical equipment, including pumps, valves, mixers, and Ariel Compressors, to detect any irregularities or signs of wear
- Interact with PLCs to adjust equipment settings, troubleshoot issues, and optimize performance, ensuring that all systems are operating within defined parameters
- Respond to alarms promptly, diagnosing the root cause of issues and implementing immediate corrective actions to prevent downtime
- Manage and control biogas flow, pressure, and temperature, ensuring that the RNG meets quality standards for pipeline injection
Process Management
- Oversee the anaerobic digestion process, monitoring feedstock input and gas production to maximize biogas yield
- Manage manure handling systems, including the operation of truck unload pits, manure transfer pumps, and storage tanks, ensuring a steady and reliable feed to the digesters
- Control biogas scrubbing systems, including H2S carbon towers, to ensure the effective removal of hydrogen sulfide and other contaminants from the biogas stream
- Optimize the use of the Covered Anaerobic Lagoon (CAL) system by managing recirculation pumps and ensuring proper mixing for efficient digestion
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to schedule necessary repairs and preventive maintenance, minimizing disruption to the digestion and gas production processes
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Lead a team of 4-5 operators, maintenance staff, and lab technicians, ensuring safe and efficient shift operations.
- Delegate tasks, provide clear instructions, and conduct regular team briefings.
- Mentor and train team members, promoting skill development and adherence to best practices.
Shift Management
- Oversee all plant operations during your shift, ensuring smooth and efficient processes.
- Address operational issues promptly, coordinating with other departments as necessary.
- Ensure accurate documentation of shift activities, including operational data, maintenance tasks, and incidents.
Logistics and Contractor Management
- Coordinate 3rd party contractors on-site, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and timely completion of tasks.
- Manage logistics for material handling, deliveries, and equipment maintenance, minimizing downtime.
- Serve as the main contact for contractors during shifts, ensuring work meets plant standards.
Operational Reporting and Communication
- Prepare and present shift reports to management, summarizing key metrics and incidents.
- Maintain continuity between shifts through regular communication with other leads.
- Participate in planning meetings to discuss operations, maintenance, and improvements.
Advanced Process and Equipment Oversight
- Lead troubleshooting of complex equipment issues, minimizing downtime.
- Implement process optimizations and monitor their impact on performance.
- Ensure team adherence to SOPs and report any deviations for correction.
Data Logging and Reporting
- Maintain detailed logs of all operational activities, including equipment performance, maintenance actions, and process adjustments
- Analyze operational data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement, making recommendations to optimize plant performance
- Communicate effectively with plant management, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders, providing clear and concise reports on plant operations and any issues encountered
- Report anomalies, equipment failures, or safety concerns immediately to ensure they are addressed promptly and do not impact plant operations
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on plant performance, highlighting key metrics and areas for potential improvement
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Process Technology, Industrial Operations, STEM or a related field (Bachelor's degree preferred).
- Pertinent experience in related fields will also be considered in lieu of degree.
- 4 years of experience in industrial plant operations, preferably in biogas, wastewater treatment, or similar industries
- Proven leadership in an industrial setting with experience managing teams.
- Advanced proficiency with SCADA, PLCs, and HMIs, with the ability to train others.
- Strong organizational skills for managing tasks and priorities.
- Excellent communication skills for effective coordination and reporting.
- Experience with 3rd party contractor coordination and compliance oversight.
- In-depth understanding of anaerobic digestion processes, biogas production, and gas treatment technologies, including experience with H2S removal and gas compression
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve complex technical issues under pressure
- A commitment to safety, with a thorough understanding of industry safety standards and best practices
