GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

Elementary School Counselor: Provide individual counseling on a short-term. as needed basis and regularly scheduled social-emotional learning (SEL) sessions for 1st-6th level students to proactively teach positive skills for emotional and social regulation.



JOB SCOPE

This position delivers programs that include individual, small group, and classroom-based counseling and SEL learning opportunities for students in 1st-6th grade. This position is collaborative and has a high degree of responsibility and decision making.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide individual counseling sessions for students in 1st through 6th grades who are referred on an as-needed basis (no more than 6 consecutive sessions without approval by DoSS)
  • Provide regularly scheduled, whole-class (grade level-specific) SEL lessons for 1st through 6th grades
  • Meet with variety of constituents weekly: Student Support Team, School Counselor, Director of Student Support
  • Meet bi-weekly with Directors of Elementary and Director of Student Support department.
  • Meet with other staff as needed to confidentially address counseling or SEL-related matters
  • Communicate with parents regarding student progress, needs, and emergent issues related to counseling or SEL.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Support in referring families to outside resources for follow-up individual/group/family counseling on an as-needed basis
  • Planning and preparation for regular SEL lessons
  • Maintain and prepare classroom

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Small group counseling
  • Whole staff training (QPR) as needed
  • Outside professional programming
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support and/or the Head of School

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing
  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, or social work
  • Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience
  • Working knowledge of American School Counseling Association standards of practice
  • Experience in Executive functioning coaching and Social-emotional learning
  • In-depth knowledge in mental health development, developmental milestones, behavior development and management, crisis intervention and prevention, impact of various disorders
  • Highly dependable and strong sense of integrity
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong and varied communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience and knowledge of classroom teaching techniques
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to assess situations quickly and make the appropriate response
  • Organized, patient, adaptable and flexible
  • Strong relationship-building skills

Preferred:

  • Professional School Counselor
  • LPC or LPC-A
  • National Certified Counselor
  • 2 years of experience as school counselor or similar work
  • Computer skills: Google Suite, Office Suite



JOB CONDITIONS

  • Due to intense nature of sessions the work can be mentally and/or physically fatiguing
  • Ability to maintain a heavy workload of both group and individual sessions

Pay is based on experience and is competitive with Independent Schools in the Dallas, Texas, area.
