Based around an anion exchange membrane (AEM), the company’s electrolyzer stacks are made using earth-abundant materials like steel and plastic—with no need for the rare earths required by today’s predominant technologies. Paired with advanced manufacturing techniques borrowed from adjacent high-tech industries, our client can lower the cost of manufacturing electrolyzer stacks by an order of magnitude. This company is led by multiple renowned industry executives, and it has locations in Santa Clara, CA, (HQ) and Lowell, MA (mfg.)


Position Title: Machine Design Engineer

Location: Lowell, MA

Department: Engineering

FLSA Status: ☒ Exempt ☐ Non-exempt


Position Purpose: (Why does this position exist in the company?)

The Machine Design Engineer leads the engineering and design of custom manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and tools for both prototyping and production of the company’s electrolyzer cells and stacks.


Essential Responsibilities: (What activities does this position perform?)

  • Machine, fixture, and tooling design, including roll handling, piece handling, processes integration (cutting, laminating, 3D printing, etc.).
  • Interface with suppliers to fabricate or select off-the-shelf solutions.
  • Interface with Manufacturing personnel to ensure Design for Manufacturability and Assembly goals are achieved.
  • Manage the build, installation, and validation of machines, fixtures, and tools with the company’s production environment.
  • Create and maintain design documentation (CAD data, models, drawings, specifications, BOMs, etc.).
  • Report Progress to Management and escalate unresolved issues in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate and resolve prototyping and production issues.

Deliverable: Successful integration of custom designed elements into pre- and final-production line equipment.


Area: Supplier engagement

Weight: 20%

Deliverable: On-time and high quality delivery of custom designed elements.


Area: Production support

Weight: 20%

Deliverable: Prioritization of prototype and production line uptime.



Qualifications: (What education, experience and skills are typically required for this position?)


Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Engineering (required)
  • Masters of Science (preferred)


Work Experience

  • 10+ years relevant, hands-on work experience designing machinery, fixturing, and tooling (required)
  • Experience with roll handling and/or roll converting equipment design (preferred)


Skills & Abilities

  • See General Employee Competencies
  • Fluency in English language
  • Hands-on abilities w/ hardware, assembly, build, test, etc.
  • Identifying and solving system faults, root-cause / corrective action
  • Needs, requirements, specifications, verification planning and testing, final validation
  • SolidWorks experience (required)
  • Automation system design and build experience is desirable


Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

Development, manufacturing, and office environments (typical). Position has an emphasis on experimental work requiring majority of time to be spent in a manufacturing and/or pilot plant environment in a hands-on capacity.


Travel Requirements:

Up to 15% domestic and international travel, including overnight, may be required.
