SpeakOut Indiana, co-produced by Indiana Town Halls and Ball State Public Media, is seeking a bold, non-partisan, relationship-focused, entrepreneurial leader dedicated to revitalizing Hoosier democracy by enabling citizens to directly engage with policymakers, elected officials, academia, media, and citizens on the issues Hoosiers care about. Open dialogue is the hallmark of citizen engagement and voter education.


This role will begin as a part-time commitment of approximately 20 hours per week during 2024 and will grow to a full-time role based on funding procured by the Executive Director (ED), Board of Directors, and Advisory Council efforts. The professional must be based within 75 miles of Indianapolis, IN, will work remotely, and travel as needed throughout the State.


Who we are:

Indiana Town Halls—a nonpartisan tax-exempt 501(c) (3) organization—is committed to making meaningful civic and political engagement with policymakers the norm. We aim to bring citizens, especially the under-40 unengaged, and policymakers together for authentic, problem-solving dialogue; and bridging the tribalism divide by modeling and sharing empathetic listening and rhetoric. Positive outcomes should include identification of common-ground solutions for all constituents which drive voter engagement, education, and seek to avoid biased dialogue.


We aim to reinvigorate Hoosier democracy through a 21st century reboot of the town hall model, in which candidates and elected officials field questions directly from voters about the issues that affect their lives, like the economy, healthcare, the environment, education, and more.


Unlike electoral debates limited to the election cycle and excluding citizen participation, our SpeakOut Indiana Series will focus year-round to build relationships between politicians and their constituents through transparency and genuine dialogue. Furthermore, SpeakOut Indiana forums will emphasize authentic listening and learning dialogue, rather than the horse-race emphasis that dominates current state and federal electoral political coverage.


SpeakOut Indiana events will feature:

  • A neutral, nonpartisan moderator
  • A diverse, live audience of key constituents
  • Unrehearsed dialogue focused on problem-solving and authentic conversations around identified, high-interest issues within the State
  • An interactive event experience integrating public media, radio broadcasting, streaming, social and digital marketing efforts


We will partner with organizations across the political spectrum — including community foundations, for-profit and non-profit media, academia including high schools and universities, civic education groups, employers, and issue advocacy groups. These community partners will co-promote the forums and assist in facilitating civic engagement before and after the formal events driving participation increases across the State of Indiana.


With startup funding secured from the Lumina Foundation, Central Indiana Community Foundation, and other Indiana philanthropists and civic institutions, SpeakOut Indiana is poised for significant impact in 2024 and beyond. This initiative is not intended to thrive only during active election seasons. Rather, the successful initiatives will encourage healthy issue-centered dialogue as a regular part of ongoing Hoosier citizenship.


Key Responsibilities

  • Start-up, Journalistic Nonprofit within the Public Sector: Create standard operations’ processes for bookkeeping, legal, insurance, tax reporting, and contracting functions.
  • Fundraising: Create and operationalize a fundraising roadmap including grant-writing to meet the needs of the current and future organizational budget.
  • Marketing: Provide oversight and guidance to the marketing function, including vendor management, marketing strategy and playbook, website design, content development, marketing communications and tactics, contact database development, and data measurement.
  • Stakeholder relations and partnership-building: Build and maintain relationships and agreements with key stakeholders, including IPB Stations, other media, universities, corporations, tech entrepreneurs, content producers, politicians, membership-based organizations, and civic engagement entities.
  • Governance: Lead all day-to-day operations and personnel. You will report to the Board of Directors and be responsible for curating a strong Board & Advisory Council of diverse, active participants.
  • Event Management: Lead SpeakOut Indiana Series of events produced and successfully marketed to constituents.


Requirements and Preferences

  • Minimum 5 years Operations & Leadership experience with high preferences for entrepreneurial experience in the nonprofit and/or government sector
  • Strong interest in and knowledge of Indiana politics with the ability to operate in a non-partisan environment, communicate and listen impactfully, and work collaboratively across the aisle
  • Working knowledge and/or experience in media and marketing technology sectors
  • Prior experience raising funds in a not-for-profit setting including building relationships with both private and public donors as well as grant-writing
  • Strong relationship building skills to curate connections within Indiana political, media, academia, corporate sponsors, and civic sectors
  • Open to a 3+ year tenure and commitment, contingent upon funding
  • Adaptable to feedback and trends in the market to lead change management initiatives


The successful ED in 2024 will accomplish the following initiatives:

  • Complete 1-3 Indiana Public Media Series produced and successfully marketed to constituents
  • Measure results and create new funding pitch including outcomes for 2025 & beyond
  • Develop a solid foundation of partners for promotion, donors, volunteers, content creation and distribution, and sponsors
  • Create Advisory Council & governance for the 501c3 organization including diverse and active participants
  • Increase the organization’s reputation as a neutral, trusted, non-partisan convener of Hoosier citizens and stakeholders
