Packaging Development Engineer

Summary: The Packaging Engineer will work with all members of the Product Development Team to develop packaging solutions for CPG products. This position will serve as a key contributing member on cross-functional business teams and support the development of product package concepts from exploration through feasibility and ultimately implementation, keeping in mind the organization's long-term goals.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Develops, engineers, and tests packaging components and modifies designs as necessary to meet consumer requirements, functional parameters, costing targets, and manufacturing & shipping requirements. Uses data and packaging tools to support recommendations.
  • Executes new package designs and performs package component testing and qualification, working with suppliers, from engineering prints to models & prototypes, through to unit and product production. Provides packaging options and risk mitigation strategies associated with each design.
  • Supports product development and quality-related projects by collaborating with key functional partners and external suppliers.
  • Writes, reviews, revises, and approves new packaging specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), packaging assembly specs, technical drawings, resin data sheets, etc.
  • On-site for packaging validation/trials as needed.
  • Support vendor communications for packaging exploration, development, and costing.
  • Resolve packaging issues as they arise to identify root causes. Provide assessment/analysis and solutions.
  • Manage function and pre-production testing program


Skills and Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • 3 years experience in packaging development.
  • Knowledge of liquid & non-liquid packaging components such as aerosols, pumps, closures, bottles, tubes, flexible films, paperboard (folding cartons, cards, displays), labels, jars, cast and blown films, film & tube laminations, dispensing options & features, and decoration methods.
  • Basic understanding of plastic converting/processing (injection & extrusion blow molding)
  • Good problem-solving and time-management skills.
  • Experience in FDA-related regulated products including pharmaceutical, medical devices and OTC a plus.

Computer Skills:

  • Microsoft Office Teams Word, Excel (Intermediate to Advanced), PowerPoint, Internet Explorer
  • NetSuite experience preferred (ERP experience required)
  • Smartsheet
  • Adobe Illustrator

  • Speaking and engaging frequently, possibly before large groups or on cell phones
  • Standing, walking and moving for long periods in multiple environments and temperatures, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Computer work with laptops and monitors
  • Some local travel needed to additional locations for meetings and events.


Language Ability:

The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. You will need to write routine reports and correspondence. You need the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
