AST employs approximately 185 skilled professionals across multi-shift operations, ensuring efficiency, precision, and timely delivery for mission-critical industries.Position OverviewWe are seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Machine Shop Manager to oversee daily machining operations in a fast-paced, high-mix, low-volume production environment. This role is responsible for coordinating labor, equipment, and workflows to meet production goals while driving safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background in CNC machining, effective leadership skills, and a collaborative mindset to align departmental performance with broader operational targets. This position reports directly to senior leadership and plays a critical role in optimizing throughput and ensuring customer delivery expectations are met.Key ResponsibilitiesManage the day-to-day operations of the machine shop, including CNC, conventional, and specialty machining equipmentOversee production schedules, labor planning, and resource utilization to ensure on-time delivery and operational efficiencyLead a team of machinists, set-up operators, and technical personnel, providing coaching, support, and performance feedbackCollaborate closely with engineering, quality, maintenance, and planning teams to drive throughput, reduce downtime, and resolve technical issuesMonitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as safety, quality, delivery, and productivity, and report progress to senior managementSupport and participate in process improvement initiatives, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA)Identify capacity constraints, machine performance issues, and labor shortages, and implement timely solutionsCoordinate with the Maintenance team to prioritize urgent repairs and ensure adherence to preventative maintenance routinesEnforce and uphold company safety standards and regulatory compliance in accordance with OSHA and internal policiesFoster a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, accountability, and professional growth on the shop floorQualificationsMinimum 10 years of machining experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management capacity Proven expertise in both CNC and manual machining, including machine setup, tooling, and basic programming understandingExperience managing high-mix, low-volume operations in a manufacturing environmentAbility to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&TStrong skills in coaching and developing machinists with a range of experience levelsFamiliarity with lean manufacturing principles, ERP systems, and performance metricsEffective communicator with strong collaboration skills across departmentsTechnical degree or equivalent experience required; A.A.S. or B.S. in Manufacturing or Industrial Technologies preferredWhy Join AST?At AST, we believe in fostering a work environment where employees can thrive both personally and professionally.
