Director of Clinical Engineering

The role involves leading a clinical engineering program to ensure the upkeep and compliance of medical equipment with relevant regulations and standards. The responsibilities include contributing to strategic planning for patient care technologies and offering technical guidance on major equipment projects and acquisitions. Additionally, the position requires oversight of equipment installations and maintenance to ensure optimal functionality.
Key duties include establishing testing and inspection protocols for biomedical instruments, managing the work order system for efficient repairs, and maintaining comprehensive equipment records. The role also encompasses interpreting policies related to equipment systems, developing training programs for proper equipment use, tracking hazard alerts and recalls, and investigating medical device incidents in line with regulatory requirements. Ensuring timely completion of tasks and quality assurance programs are essential components of the role.
Leadership responsibilities include supervising and directing the Clinical Engineering staff, ensuring adherence to hospital policies on performance evaluations, discipline, and training. The role demands effective communication with staff, participation in hospital committees, and maintaining a safe and confidential work environment. Financial duties involve designing a cost-effective departmental budget, seeking cost-saving measures, and staying informed about technical and legal advancements. The role also includes active participation in professional organizations and ongoing personal development.
The ideal candidate for this position should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical or Electrical Engineering, with a Master’s Degree preferred. They must have 4-6 years of increasingly responsible experience in Clinical Engineering, including at least two years in a management role. Additionally, certification from the International Certification Commission in Clinical Engineering is preferred upon hire. These educational qualifications and experience requirements are crucial for ensuring the candidate has the technical expertise and leadership skills necessary to excel in this role.
