Intellectual Property Paralegal

Midsize national trial firm with over 100 attorneys throughout the US seeks an IP Litigation Paralegal for a hybrid (3/2) role for their Washington, DC office. The firm handles sophisticated work on behalf of patent holders suing major corporations for patent infringement. Candidates should have 5+ years of IP Litigation experience, have trial experience, and be a positive team member who can show leadership and direction to the team.
Position Overview:
The Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation Paralegal assists attorneys in managing all phases of IP litigation cases, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced legal environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Case Management:
• Assist with managing the lifecycle of IP litigation cases from initial filing through trial or settlement.
• Prepare case calendars, including deadlines for pleadings, discovery, hearings, and trials.
• Organize and maintain case files, both physical and electronic.
2. Document Preparation and Review:
• Draft, proofread, and format legal documents such as pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and correspondence.
• Assist attorneys in preparing and finalizing exhibits, trial binders, and court filings.
• Review and analyze documents for relevance, privilege, and other legal considerations.
3. Discovery Support:
• Assist with document production and eDiscovery processes, including organizing, indexing, and coding documents.
• Prepare deposition summaries and manage deposition transcripts.
• Coordinate discovery-related tasks, such as scheduling depositions, drafting subpoenas, and managing third-party document requests.
4. Legal Research and Analysis:
• Conduct factual and legal research using tools like Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, or other databases.
• Assist in researching IP case law, statutes, and court rules relevant to litigation.
5. Trial Preparation and Support:
• Assist with the organization of trial materials, including exhibit lists, witness lists, and pretrial orders.
• Coordinate logistics for trials, including technology setup, witness scheduling, and travel arrangements.
• Provide on-site trial support as necessary.
6. Client and Vendor Coordination:
• Communicate with clients, expert witnesses, court personnel, and outside vendors.
• Assist with the management of outside service providers such as document review teams and court reporters.
7. Administrative Tasks:
• Track billable hours and assist with case-related expenses.
• Support attorneys with time-sensitive tasks and handle additional duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree and/or a Paralegal Certificate from an accredited program.
• Experience: 5+ years of experience as a litigation paralegal, with specific experience in intellectual property litigation strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in legal software tools, such as Relativity, Concordance, Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, and document management systems.
• Strong knowledge of eDiscovery processes and litigation support technology.
Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong understanding of federal and state court filing procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Work Environment:
• May require occasional travel for trials or depositions.
• Ability to work overtime as needed to meet case deadlines.
