Our client is the premier environmental services provider in the Twin Cities metropolitan area providing waste and recycling collection to the public and private sectors since 1988. They are the largest family owned and operated waste and recycling provider in Minnesota providing over 100,000 services each week with a fleet fueled by both diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG).
Job Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for leading the safety program effort, including making plans, coordinating activities, and tracking progress. Define and regularly communicate responsibilities and authorities for implementing and maintaining the program and holding people accountable for performance. Builds and oversees a behavior-based safety culture including active site visits or ride-alongs, analyzing safety risks, making recommendations for corrective or preventative measures; coaching alongside management on how to create safety culture within their departments
Education and Experience
- Exhibits safety and health expertise, sound instructional skills and flexibility
- Experience training adults
- Practical experience in the field of safety and health as well as experience in training facilitation
- Knowledge of Commercial Motor Vehicle accident and injury prevention principles and techniques, DOT and OSHA compliance
- General safety and health background – or subject matter expert in a health or safety related field
- Written and verbal communication that is clear, concise and matches the readability and language of the intended audience – and with enough follow up to close the loop on communication
- Intermediate or Advanced Microsoft Office user
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Experience meeting deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Experience holding all levels of the company accountable to policies and procedures
- Experience with process improvements and change management
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Defensive driving certification or instructor certification preferred (Smith System required within x date of hire)
- CDL experience
- Must pass drug alcohol, crt, etc test requirements
Primary Job Duties
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations providing spot audits and compliance checks
- Work with HR on record-keeping requirements including DOT, OSHA, EPA and FROI
- Acquire and review data and input from electronic monitoring systems and programs, including on board system, check rides by trainer, and road observations?
- Respond to and analyze accidents, injuries and incidents, identify root cause and make necessary improvements
- Develop, schedule and provide new hire and ongoing safety training to all employees (injury prevention, employee right to know, lockout tagout, PPE, forklift safety, proper lifting, body mechanics, ergonomics, ladder safety, fall protection, electrical hazards, etc)
- Chair, coordinate and facilitate Safety Team meetings as well as monthly driver and mechanic meetings
- Develop and implement remedial training program for drivers or mechanics who have had accidents and/or incidents
- Provide support training to managers, dispatchers and supervisors as required on safety and compliance issues.
- Lead trainer for the Smith System. This position will conduct annual training for all drivers of company vehicles, including new employees and any employee whose responsibility is to operate a company vehicle at any point.
- Recommend, develop, and reinforce company safety policies
- Maintain Emergency Action Plan and training
- Maintain the DOT drug and alcohol program
- Manage auto claims and loss control activities
- Maintain the AWAIR program, including a loss prevention program that describes the safest ways to work, sets measurable goals and performance standards, and monitors annual progress
- Establish realistic, measurable goals for improving safety and health which include both leading and lagging indicators
- Provide positive recognition for meeting or exceeding safety and health goals aimed at preventing injury and illness; including management, documentation and administration of safety recognition and incentive programs
- Establish ways for management and all workers to communicate freely and often about safety and health issues
- Keep informed of developments in federal, state, and local safety laws
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a climate-controlled company. Employees operate standard office equipment including: telephone, headset, computer, computer monitors, keyboard, mouse, and copier/scanner. Physical tasks of job include: walking, sitting, standing, and bending.
