Emergency Department Manager (RN) Job DescriptionOverview

The Emergency Department (ED) Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective operation of the hospital's emergency department. This position requires a registered nurse with strong clinical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of emergency medicine practices and protocols.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Management and Leadership
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, plans, and standards aligned with the organization's clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements.
  • Provide visionary leadership to drive continuous improvement in patient care, operational efficiency, and staff performance.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and evidence-based practice within the ED.
Operational Management
  • Direct and evaluate all aspects of ED operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management.
  • Implement and monitor quality control measures to ensure high standards of patient care and safety.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless patient flow and efficient resource utilization.
  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance with allocated funding.
  • Oversee internal and external audits, implementing corrective actions as needed.
Staff Management and Development
  • Plan and monitor staffing activities, including recruitment, hiring, orientation, and retention strategies.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and implement performance improvement plans when necessary.
  • Manage disciplinary actions in accordance with hospital policies and labor laws.
  • Identify and facilitate continuing education and professional development opportunities for ED staff.
  • Create an environment that encourages professional growth, teamwork, and job satisfaction.
Clinical Excellence and Innovation
  • Integrate evidence-based practices into ED operations and clinical protocols.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in emergency medicine and nursing.
  • Collaborate with the medical director to develop and implement clinical guidelines and care pathways.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory standards and accreditation requirements.
Patient Experience and Quality Improvement
  • Implement strategies to enhance patient satisfaction and improve the overall patient experience in the ED.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient care, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage and resolve patient complaints, using feedback to drive process improvements.
Interdepartmental Collaboration
  • Work closely with other hospital departments to ensure coordinated care and efficient patient transitions.
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees and initiatives related to emergency services and overall hospital operations.
  • Collaborate with community partners and emergency services to improve regional emergency care delivery.
Qualifications
  • Current RN license in good standing
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of emergency nursing experience
  • At least 3 years of management experience in an emergency department or similar acute care setting
  • Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and other relevant emergency care certifications
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations and lead multidisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency in healthcare information technology and data analysis
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously during work hours
  • Capability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Visual acuity and hearing sufficient to assess patient conditions and monitor equipment
