POSITION SUMMARY

Assist scientists, both independently and collaboratively, with laboratory and investigative procedures. This role performs various assays, imaging analyses, and molecular biology experiments to support the research projects in the GI Oncology translational lab. Will be required to perform other technical and maintenance duties to assist with the research activities of the laboratory. Will be required to work with patient samples. May be required to work with animal models.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Independently or semi-independently, designs, plans, and carries out experiments.

• Analyze and interpret experimental results and provide input on subsequent experimental designs.

• Analyze data using basic computer software and report the results to the principal investigator and colleagues.

• Evaluate, recommend, and develop new techniques to assist in overall laboratory efficiency.

• Conduct literature search and assist in editing scientific publications, abstracts, and posters.

• Provide working supervision to junior laboratory staff as needed. Provide technical support to faculty and staff including training of new employees, residents, postdoctoral associates, fellows, and students.

• Assist in the orientation and training of new investigators, fellows, residents, and technical staff in the use of equipment, products, and experimental techniques.

• Responsible for tissue & cell culture activities including transfection experiments, and cell survival/apoptosis assays.

• Perform routine molecular biology laboratory procedures that include extraction of DNA and RNA from different starting materials (e.g. cell lines, primary cells, human biopsies), quality control of the extracted nucleic acids, design and execution of PCR and qPCR assays, flow-cytometry experiments and gel electrophoresis of proteins and nucleic acids.

• May assist in the isolation of cfDNA from patient-derived plasma, and detection and isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from patient blood.

• May assist in the preparation of high-quality single-cell suspension from patient tumor biopsies for single-cell sequencing experiments.

• May perform experiments to genotype patient-specific SNPs, copy number variants, identify and validate patient tumor-specific DNA and/or RNA mutations, and profile DNA methylation patterns.

• Prepare and maintain detailed records, logs, and summary reports of all procedures and results including graphs, scientific calculations, and statistical analysis charting.

• May assist in microscopic image analysis.

• Ensure a clean working area and be responsible for washing and storing glassware.

• Ensure that safe laboratory practices are followed, including the use and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.

• Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, and/or reagents. May order supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensure that needs are escalated appropriately. Receives supply orders and confirms the accuracy of delivery. May

assist with cost control.

• Assist in audits and screens of vendors/suppliers to evaluate the quality of products and equipment they supply. Corresponds with them for technical support about those products.

• Ensure that facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition. Coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs as needed by contacting the vendors and the service engineers. May advise on upgrades for performance enhancements.

• Will be responsible for the receipt, storage, cataloging, and shipment of samples within and between institutions.

• Accurately record sample information and results into a database and communicate experimental results to users and the team.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree required.

• At least 1-2 years of lab experience

Desired but not Required

• Experience in handling patient samples

• Experience working in a sequencing facility

• Experience with flow cytometry and analysis
