Role Description

This is a full-time Instrument Engineer role within our Corpus Christi, TX office. The Instrument Engineer will be responsible for the instruments and controls for our client capital and maintenance projects within refining, petrochemical and pipeline businesses. This role involves working collaboratively with our electrical and instrumentation department as well as all other disciplines. We work as a team to ensure the successful integration of all aspects of the project.


Under the supervision of our I&E Department Manager, the instrument engineer will provide instrument, controls, and electrical engineering support within the client projects. It is the expectation Onyx Engineering and also our clients that all safety policies and procedures will be practiced at all times. The candidate will apply knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures in each project.

The instrument engineer will be asked to visit the field to gather and verify necessary information that will be required to complete the instrument and electrical project scopes. The candidate will demonstrate their professional communication skillset with all clients as well as within our Onyx Teams. The candidate will be exploring various technologies within the refining industry that will allow you to expand your skillset and knowledge not only within your discipline but also within this industry.


Will also participate within project meetings and department meetings reporting progress within assignments, answering technical questions for site and/or vendors, and all other required information needed. Onyx Engineering, Inc. values our talented personnel and the quality that our clients know and respect. 


Responsibilities:

  • Meet or exceed the company and client safety standards
  • Comply with all company and customer procedures, engineering practices and other standards
  • Provide leadership to a group of Instrument & Electrical designers at the site including keeping track of job progress and work schedules, provide design advice, and assist with problem solving
  • Read and fully understand P&ID’s and other documents which describe the scope of work to be done
  • Provide electrical and instrumentation design support to capital and service projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Design of MV and LV electrical systems, including both power, control and instrumentation wiring
  • Application of company and industry standards to generate instrument and electrical construction packages
  • Work with plant engineers to develop instrument data sheets
  • QA/QC of instrumentation and control systems along with associated wiring, panels, etc.
  • Work with Onyx I&E Team to develop I&C Connections/ loop diagrams, electrical schematics, instrument/lighting/grounding/area classification plan drawings, cable tray/conduit/wire sizing, cable selection, PLC panel sizing and verifications of instruments/controls
  • Work closely with plant engineers, contractors, and team members to achieve project success
  • Field as-built, measurement, and design as project requires
  • Perform detailed material take-offs and construction estimating
  • Request and obtain material quotes as well as ordering material for projects
  • Follow up on ordered materials, field installation and redlines


Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Electrical Engineering
  • Ability to interpret electrical codes and standards
  • Proficient in CAD software and simulation tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience within a Phase Gate Approach within Projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in the refining, petrochemical or pipeline industry is a plus


Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science from an accredited college in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as an Engineer
  • Complete all safety courses required for client sites upon hire
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Wearing of required PPE and drive safely to job site for field measurement, verification and as built of drawings
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements upon selection that include Background Screening and Drug Screening
  • Current TWIC Card or Able to apply and obtain a TWIC card upon hire
