At SCS, our focus is to address the unmet needs of unsheltered individuals and families in the Central Beach Area of San Diego – making sure the most vulnerable are cared for with compassion and equity
through the efforts of Community Members and Community Partners. Shoreline Community Services believes that providing meaningful transitional work, with minimal barriers, can help our unsheltered neighbors get a fresh start. To that end, we launched an employment program, the Community Care Crew about a year ago.
6-8 Crew Members are employed to care for the streets of the Central Beach Area and beyond,
with the intention of growing to 9-12 Crew Members. Specifically, services offered include street
cleaning, power washing, graffiti removal, light landscaping, custodial/janitorial services, and event
setup/takedown.
An essential part of the Community Care Crew program is the individual support each Crew
Member receives. Weekly case management, work readiness training, career guidance and
permanent job placement are key components of the program. In addition, after an introductory
period, Crew Members will be considered for temporary housing, to have a safe place to keep
personal items, relax, sleep, shower.
Duties Include:
• Creating and implementing initial needs assessment
• Addressing health, addiction, criminal records, debt
• Goal setting (work, education, housing) and accountability
• Creating relevant Individual Service Plans
• Assisting in life-skill training – communication, time management, personal finances, health
and wellness
• Coordinating with work readiness programs, career navigators, housing coordinators and
other resources
• Tracking progress/outcomes as people move toward self-sufficiency
• Hours: approximately 15-20 hours/week but growing to 21- 25 hours/week by 12/2024
• Wage: $25 per hour
