Our current open position is for an engineering role focused on laser welding of metals. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about advancing laser-based technologies to enhance manufacturing processes. This opportunity allows you to support and lead a talented team as they explore the cutting-edge of laser welding technology.

The Laser Welding Engineer will manage engineering tasks related to laser projects and may take the lead as the main investigator on projects. You will assist senior engineers in research, lab experiments, and other activities within the Lasers division. Additionally, you will identify technical and business opportunities, connecting clients with the wide range of resources available at EWI.

ROLE & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Engage with clients to understand their laser processing needs and requirements
  • Build strong relationships with EWI's clients to ensure satisfaction and identify new project opportunities
  • Operate laser welding equipment, supporting tools, software, and hardware
  • Research new manufacturing technologies in the laser-processing field, including vendor selection and tooling approval
  • Lead research initiatives by collaborating with project managers, technicians, and engineers in various disciplines
  • Stay up-to-date with industry advancements and trends
  • Pursue educational opportunities to stay current with trends and continuously improve skills
  • Analyze issues, gather data, and find logical solutions to problems; apply knowledge to deliver effective results for clients
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documents for internal and external audiences
  • Deliver presentations to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide input on EWI's funding and develop proposals as needed
  • Handle customer interactions for sales transactions and explore sales opportunities proactively
  • Engage with clients through inquiries to identify potential sales leads
Minimum Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Expertise in laser processing using 1-micron solid-state lasers
  • Familiarity with optical systems and proficiency in experimental analysis
  • Ability to handle challenges in process development and adapt accordingly
  • Basic knowledge of metals like carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys
  • Proactive and creative approach to project work
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding of individual contributions to project financial performance
  • Flexible and adaptable team player
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for laser processes in manufacturing
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (10-15%) for customer visits and conferences
EDUCATION:
  • B.S. in Welding Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
EXPERIENCE:
  • Three (3) years' experience in laser processing and laser welding of metals
  • Preferred background in metallurgy and experience in a research and development environment
  • Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys is a plus
