What We Do:
The Collection Section serves about 200,000 customers each year. As a Tax Examiner in this section, you will collect various delinquent taxes.

You are responsible for answering questions and resolving account notices and billing issues for customers who are navigating tax collection enforcement.

Customers who interact with you might have previously been contacted by our third-party collection agency, had their wages and/or bank account levied, a lien filed upon their property, or had a judgment entered with the court system.


As a Collection Section team member you will:

  • Research, explain, and advise taxpayers on how to comply with Colorado tax laws, especially those pertaining to outstanding tax debt and collection enforcement;
  • Perform research, analysis, and necessary adjustments to customer accounts; and
  • Provide high-quality customer service and de-escalate conflicts when necessary.

A Typical Day in Collections:

  • Grab your coffee or tea and settle into your home workspace.
  • Start your morning to-do list, which usually includes checking email and reviewing work items that have been assigned to you.
  • Check-in with your supervisor and team over instant message or through a virtual meeting. Supervisors are always available to help you.
  • Log into the phone system at 8:00 and begin fielding calls.
  • Between calls, complete various work items and projects, which are similar to phone calls but include responding to written correspondence.
  • Take morning and afternoon breaks and a mid-day meal break to refresh and recharge.
  • Complete various virtual training sessions, as needed or desired, for professional development, equity, diversity, and inclusion, best practices, and our leadership mentoring program.
  • Virtually attend our section-wide staff meeting each Friday and our division-wide or department-wide meetings each month. Attend in-person training sessions and team meetings, as required.
  • Log out at the end of your shift, and enjoy the 20-foot commute to your living room.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet one of the following or any combination of experience/education to meet the minimum (MQ) qualifications:

OPTION 1:

  • Two years of experience providing customer service in a call center environment or other public customer service environment.
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

OR

OPTION 2:

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Collections and/or tax experience.
  • Experience using GenTax software.

  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with public facing customer service.
  • Experience working in a call center environment.

CDOR:


Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.


As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy.

Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.
