The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role, also known as DSP, involves assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities I/DD to enhance their quality of life. The main focus of the DSP is to ensure the overall well-being and safety of these individuals while advocating for their personal desires, needs, and aspirations.

Responsibilities:
  • Addressing the personal care needs of each individual, which includes grooming, bathing, hygiene, toileting (including incontinence), feeding, and addressing any other requirements.
  • Supporting individuals in achieving their goals by accompanying them to medical appointments, visiting family and friends, engaging in preferred leisure activities, and facilitating social interactions.
  • Adhering to medical instructions and overseeing medication administration, unless specifically trained as a Proxy.
  • Scheduling necessary medical and dental appointments based on instructions from healthcare professionals or Individual Service Plans (ISP).
  • Implementing emergency protocols during fire, storm, or other emergency situations.
  • Contributing to the development of ISP objectives.
  • Providing necessary training to individuals as per the ISP to assist them in reaching their goals.
  • Documenting daily activities as per DBHDD standards and other required data collection procedures.
  • Keeping records of medical and dental visits, weight changes, medication details, incidents, personal belongings, and other relevant information.
  • Ensuring that meals are prepared according to specified menus.
  • Enforcing household regulations.
  • Maintaining a tidy, secure, and healthy living environment by performing housekeeping duties, notifying the House Manager of any issues, securing medication and hazardous substances, and reporting potential safety hazards.
  • Promptly reporting any unusual incidents, safety concerns, or abnormal activities to the House Manager.
  • Alerting the House Manager immediately upon discovering or being informed of suspected individual abuse cases.
  • Following instructions from professional consultants (e.g., BCBA, RN, RD) to adequately meet the individuals' requirements.
  • Participating in team meetings and engaging in ongoing training opportunities.
