Emissions Test Engineer

Columbus, Ohio, United States Toyota Material Handling Full time

About the Job:

The Test Engineer (Emissions) plays a critical role in ensuring TMH's forklifts and components comply with EPA, CARB and ECCC emissions regulations. This individual will contribute significantly towards achieving product certification and compliance by developing and executing comprehensive certification and compliance test programs, completing technical documentation, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle, including third-party test facilities (as applicable).

The ideal candidate is a detailed, process-oriented individual, capable of designing and following structured processes for emissions-related testing within the parameters of laws and regulations. The individual in this role is expected to manage testing, collect and maintain relevant data, and document all emissions-related test requirements for regulatory reporting effectively and efficiently.

What you'll be doing:

  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment and deep understanding of the current and upcoming emissions regulations.
  • Lead test planning discussions with TICO, Hekinan, the TMH Regulatory team, and third-party lab teams, including hardware preparation, test execution, troubleshooting, data analysis, root cause analysis of degradation mechanisms, etc.
  • Drive the planning and development of the test strategy, including determining new tests to be performed during any certification or compliance-related inquiries.
  • Maintain detailed test logs and document the day-to-day activities, including updating daily activity details in a tracking document, providing updates in daily and weekly meetings, cataloging all the lessons learned, and reporting in daily meetings.
  • Ensure data integrity and retention according to regulatory requirements.
  • Support emissions audits, testing, new calibrations, and running change assessments by collaborating with TICO, Hekinan, Toyota Material Handling Regulatory Compliance Group (TMH RCG), and third-party test labs (as applicable).
  • Collaborate with the Technical Advisor (Emissions) to complete the required tests and tasks.
  • Collaborate with and assist third-party test lab teams/engineers to understand, brainstorm, and strategize testing requirements, test plans, data acquisition system setup, sensor, or probe identification (depending on the type of test), and ensure completion of the test as per the outlined plan.
  • Create technical deep dive reviews to share results and information with stakeholders (cross-functional teams).
  • Identify and propose test equipment selection to engineers and leaders for tests when needed.
  • Review data acquisition equipment configuration and assist in any prototype, bench, and/or product tests, both indoors and outdoors, for testing within TMH facilities.
  • Analyze collected test data to ensure the use of proper channels and details with little to no guidance.
  • Process acquired data from tests and conduct simple analysis using tools such as Microsoft Excel and others as required.
  • Understand current test plans, test procedures, old test reports, and other available material to complete testing.
  • Create, modify, or document identified new test procedures, equipment setup procedures, and good practices by engineers and lab engineers.
  • Ensure the completion of test reports as per the specified timeline and quality.
  • Prepare and implement improvements to processes and procedures related to testing.
  • Participate in facilities installation and other lab-related activities as requested.
  • Document and countermeasure testing-related issues as they arise. Ideate the countermeasures with engineers and leaders.
  • Participate in preparing 5Ys for failed tests or issues experienced. Ideate with Engineers and leaders on potential countermeasures and track the recurrence of the issue.
  • Identify Kaizen opportunities and participate in Hoshin and Kaizen objectives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

What we're looking for:

Required

  • Relevant post-secondary degree (Engineering, Environmental, Design, or similar field).
  • Strong commitment to compliance, confidentiality, integrity, and ethical behavior
  • Strong problem-solving skills and drive, with an ability to lead multiple projects and initiatives in parallel.
  • Experience working in engine testing, off-road equipment testing, and emissions certification testing areas/fields.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of IC engines, engine emissions, treatment functions, and components.
  • 3 or more years' work experience performing engine development or testing.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and training team members.
  • Strong knowledge of engine testing equipment, software, and tools.
  • Microsoft Office Skills
  • Self-motivated individual dedicated to fostering sustainable change.
  • Ability to summarize technical issues and communicate effectively.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to identify trends and make connections between regulatory compliance scenarios and TMH business priorities.
