The College of Nanotechnology, Science and Engineering at the University at Albany is seeking an Academic Advisor to oversee advisement services for its engineering undergraduate programs. The Academic Advisor supports CNSE students with academic planning, programming, and course selection. The successful candidate will aid students in planning their academic careers, interpreting academic rules and regulations, and ensuring prerequisites and/or course requirements are met. In addition, the successful candidate must commit to student-centered advisement and be comfortable using advising technology to assist in advisement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee advisement for undergraduate CNSE majors, including reviewing degree audits, recommending courses, and helping to keep students on track for timely degree completion.
  • Assist in academic planning to adapt to students' abilities and interests.
  • Advise CNSE second majors, minors, and intended majors as needed.
  • Convey and interpret the University's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study.
  • Provide academic advising and referrals to assist students in utilizing university policy to protect their academic status, including petitions, withdrawing from courses, late withdrawals, transfer equivalence, etc.
  • Refer students to related support offices within the University (Counseling and Psychological Services, Career and Professional Development, Undergraduate Education, etc.) that facilitate student success and connect them within their program of study.
  • Work directly with faculty in various schools/colleges or departments within the University to enhance the advisement process.
  • Attend all school/college or department meetings related to the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Act as liaison to the Office of Undergraduate Education to process academic Degree in Absentia applications.
  • Assist the Registrar in reviewing the audits of graduating seniors and offering advisement to solve degree clearance issues.
  • Relay the need for adjustments to the CNSE curriculum to the appropriate Program Chair, as necessary.
  • Work in close consultation with the Program Chairs and Administrative Managers, providing feedback on student enrollment needs and ensuring procedures for student registration in controlled sections are coordinated and understood.
  • Help organize events relevant to the undergraduate program, such as commencement, student recruitment events, and open houses.
  • Attend meetings and events pertinent to the undergraduate program, such as Open Houses, summer transfer planning conferences, and honors program events. Occasional weekends and evenings are required.
  • Coordinate transfer admissions advisement and all transfer conferences to facilitate the smooth transfer of students to and from the University.
  • Utilize appropriate advising technology (PeopleSoft, EAB, DARS).

Other Responsibilities:

  • Serve as CNSE representative for college and university committees regarding advisement.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and attend training and conferences as necessary.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • One year of professional experience or relevant graduate-level employment with a college student population.
  • Experience in providing academic and personal advisement or case management and outreach to support students in meeting educational or career goals, specifically with students in transition or on academic probation.
  • Strong interpersonal, writing (as assessed by application materials submitted), and oral communication skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Two or more years professional academic advising experience.
  • Experience working with special populations including, STEM, international, transfer and/or historically excluded populations of students.
  • Proficient in Spanish or other non-English language.
