Naval Officer

Join the Navy as a Master-at Arms In any big community like the Navy, law enforcement and security play a crucial role. Whether it's executing crime prevention programs or carrying out anti-terrorism measures, Sailors working as the Navy's military police are ready to handle any situation. They provide security on ships, at bases, and at military installations worldwide. They even train to become K9 dog handlers and protect and escort shipboard weapons in the armory. Serving and protecting starts with defending our own. Start your journey with the Navy today
- What to Expect as a Master-at Arms:
- Provide security and physical protection for service members
- Train fellow Sailors in security and shore patrol duties
- Serve as a security advisor for your squadron
- Assist in crowd control and riot prevention
- Operate military prisons (brigs) aboard ships and onshore
- Handle, care for, and train dogs that detect narcotics and explosives
- Conduct waterborne security patrols and interdiction operations
- Provide protective services to high-ranking dignitaries and government officials
- Conduct preliminary investigations into Uniform Code of Military Justice violations
- Conduct crime prevention programs
- Work Environment: As an Enlisted Sailor in law enforcement, you'll have the opportunity to work in various environments. Although you might work behind a desk occasionally, you will often be out interacting with the community in a law enforcement capacity. Expect assignments at shore stations in the United States and overseas, aboard ships, or as part of a maritime security squadron. Your assignments could take you anywhere worldwide.
- Training & Advancement: Upon completing initial Recruit Training (known as Boot Camp), individuals pursuing a Law Enforcement & Security role will receive formal Navy technical training at 'A' School in San Antonio, TX, for about 9 weeks. This training includes antiterrorism techniques, armed sentry/post standing techniques, crime prevention, military and civil law, communications, first aid, firearms deployment, and physical restraint techniques. Promotion opportunities are available but competitive and based on performance.
- Post-Service Opportunities: Specialized training and work experience gained in service can lead to valuable credentialing and occupational opportunities in related civilian fields. Further education opportunities include access to professional credentials, certifications, and credit hours toward a bachelor's or associate degree through the American Council on Education, Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
- Qualifications & Requirements: A high school diploma or equivalent is required to become an Enlisted Sailor in law enforcement and security. Individuals seeking a Master-at Arms position should be people-oriented, dedicated, resourceful, versatile, possess physical strength, manual dexterity, and be competent with tools and equipment. Citizenship requirements may vary.
- Part-Time Opportunities: Serving part-time as a Navy Reserve Sailor involves duties during scheduled drilling and training periods. Masters-at Arms in the Navy Reserve typically work close to their homes during monthly drilling and can serve anywhere worldwide for annual training.
- For current or former military Enlisted servicemembers: Prior experience satisfies the initial Recruit Training requirement - eliminating the need to go through Boot Camp again.
- For those without prior military experience: Initial Recruit Training in Great Lakes, IL, is required. This training course prepares you for service in the Navy Reserve and counts as your first Annual Training.
