Magic Leap's Engineering Services roles are comprised of engineers responsible for coordinating requirements across all of our AR products, programs, and customers.
They are responsible for research, design, development, quality assurance, reliability, and testing engineering duties across all the Product Development and Engineering sub-families.
As a Principal Tooling Engineer within our New Product Introduction team, your primary responsibility will be to collaborate with Hardware Engineering, Strategic Sourcing, and our tooling partners to design, produce, and qualify mass production tooling at our partners' manufacturing sites.
What you'll do
Design for Manufacturing:
Must have extensive experience with CREO 3D modeling.
Must have extensive experience with Moldflow, that can perform Expert Level MoldFlow simulations to influence material selections, gating schemes / tool designs etc., and to provide detailed presentations to convey design intent to both suppliers and internal teams.
Working with Strategic Sourcing to generate tooling cost models for initial manufacturing and subsequent ECNs for all custom tooling
Tooling Approvals:
Manage digital information regarding all tooling to verify compliance to spec.
This includes 3D design review and approval for primary tooling, as well as all ancillary pre- and post-process fixtures such as end-of-arm tooling, load cells, CNC fixtures, paint mask tooling, inspection fixtures, etc.
In region FOT Coverage:
Travel to regional sites abroad to assist in tooling bring-up, proving targeted quality specifications are met, and provide approval of parts for ship-to-build quantities
Change Management:
Coordinate engineering changes between mechanical teams and relevant suppliers to meet goals for spec compliance, cost targets, and build schedules
Perform process optimizations when needed using statistical methodology.
Create, manage, and publish project schedule metrics to upper management in proper time cycles
Managing tool construction build and process scheduling of all custom tooling from construction kick-off through the qualification phase
The experience you bring
12+ years of professional experience designing, fabricating, debugging, and launching tooling in high-volume manufacturing while delivering on quality, cost, and capacityBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, plastics engineering, polymer science, or other applicable technical area, or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field.
Excellent knowledge of manufacturing processes for thermoplastics, thermosets, metal stamping, CNC machining, die casting, thixo molding, and Metal Injection Molding
Experience in 3D modeling / advanced surfacing for DFM and tool design reviews
Expert in plastic molding simulations using Moldflow to complete predictive analysis on component quality
Experience with the processing of molding, stamping, casting, CNC machining, etc
Proficient in statistical analysis for optimization and qualification of custom tooling
Experience with GD&T to evaluate and provide advice on print creation
Computer literacy and a basic understanding and knowledge of computer-based analytical tools (i.e., Spreadsheet, Word & Database, PowerPoint, JUMP, or Minitab) and purchasing/accounting practices are important
Must exhibit problem-solving skills and possess an understanding of contracting and negotiating
Must be Innovative, self-motivated, have the ability to work with minimal supervision and exhibit strong leadership and project management
Excellent written, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required
Experience with high-volume, world-class design and manufacturing techniques for consumer electronic products

Working knowledge of OR practical experience with metrology equipment such as OGP, CMM, and CAV
Practical experience in the application of embedded model-based definition (PMI Data) and or GD&T Advisor
Use of Structured Light Scannings such as the ATOS Scanner and GOM software
Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt trained in either LEAN or DFSS
Practical experience managing and performing process DOE's
