Student Support Specialist - Sierra Vista

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Social Worker is responsible for serving as a school team

member and utilizing expertise, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive

educational services, and respond to behavioral health needs of students. In collaboration with the school team,

orchestrates supportive services and referrals that address the personal/social development needs of students

primarily in an academic environment to support academic performance. The goal for each student is to

graduate from high school, be competitive for work and postsecondary education, and be prepared for life.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • During the school year, utilizes the majority of time providing direct services to students, and remaining time in collaborating community services and stakeholder families.
  • Available to provide direct services at assigned school sites for consistent involvement with student matters that are personal, behavioral, and/or triggered by external/internal factors.
  • Assist in designing and implementing developmentally appropriate and prevention- oriented individual and group activities/sessions to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Monitors students' needs and facilitates the student's engagement with community resources available to provide the needed services; provides effective recommendations as appropriate; and provides follow-up recommendations as needed.
  • Assist teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Interfaces with Lead Teacher and community resources to resolve situations, seek resources, and create action plans in the best interest of student support to positively impact retention, graduation, and overall wellness of students.
  • Maintains confidential records and progress notes.
  • Ensures proper recordkeeping of these confidential documents are adhered to.
  • Participates in professional development to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Connects families with appropriate community and government resources and recommendations (i.e., transportation, insurance, mental health, food, service providers, etc.)
  • Provides and participates in crisis intervention.
  • Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff, families, and other educational/community resources to meet the needs of students in the educational setting.
  • Plans, teaches, and monitors social/emotional/behavioral interventions for increased achievement of students when needed.
  • Uses skill-based interventions for students struggling with academic, social, or emotional challenges.
  • Supports individual students and/or groups of students.
  • Facilitates support groups to meet the various personal, social, and academic needs of identified students.
  • Trains school staff on suicide and self-injury protocol, Department of Child Safety (DCS) reporting, bully prevention, and harassment/sexual harassment issues.
  • Uses student data to plan, implement, and assess school-wide interventions.
  • Helps to identify and support school-wide prevention efforts.
  • Provides parent education and community outreach.
  • Coordinates, develops, and maintains 504 plans for individual student accommodations.
  • Participates as needed at special education meetings to advocate for students as well as collaborate and consult with teachers and parents about educational goals.
  • Cultivates and promotes a culture of wellness and self-care.
  • This position will attend required program training and conduct required program activities, including implementation of social emotional learning strategies.
  • Ensures services are in compliance with all pertinent federal, state and local statutes and regulations, and maintains and promotes cultural competence.
  • Inform appropriate administrators if information is received that has implications regarding staff/teachers/administrators, or in serious incidents may warrant disciplinary measures and/or reporting to authorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field. One (1) year prior work experience in education, youth or behavioral health services.
  • IVP Fingerprint clearance card is required.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license and clearance/approval from corporate auto insurer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in related field: Social Work, Psychology or human services specialty.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to see/read a computer monitor screen.
  • Must be able to lift and carry five (5) pounds.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
