Healthy NewsWorks is making a difference in children's lives. Our health-focused journalism program provides young students in under-resourced schools with skills and confidence that are critical to their academic success and will help them develop as citizens who can strengthen communities.

We are seeking a Teacher to serve as a Program Associate to partner with K-8 classroom teachers to deliver Healthy NewsWorks lessons, activities, and initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring diverse teaching experience and a passion for media literacy and empowering kids.

The Program Associate will work closely with our Program Manager and Executive Director as we expand our newspaper and other media programs into New Jersey and additional Philadelphia schools.

As we build and refine our program, the role will require partnering with teachers in our schools and our staff to ensure we bring the best program to our students.

This is a part-time position and offers training and ongoing professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be available 15-20 hours per week during the school year for preparation, editing, direct instruction, and communication with teachers and team members, and other responsibilities, as needed.
  • Work mostly during the school day, but some availability after school hours.
  • Instruct in person and/or virtually.
  • Teach students in grades K-8, as Core Reporters (a weekly set time throughout the school year, OR a semester session), Cub Reporters (a weekly set time for 4-5 weeks, 30-40 minutes per session), or Special Lessons (1-2 session lessons on a particular topic).
  • Support short film production as needed (scheduling, script writing, coordination, etc).
  • Help organize and lead family workshops and teacher training.
  • Ability to travel to and between schools in South Jersey and Philadelphia.
  • Attend a weekly, virtual team meeting.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should have experience teaching elementary and/or middle school students, maintain strong writing skills, model respectful classroom culture, communicate content clearly, and be comfortable with technology (or at least a willingness to learn new programs quickly).

EDUCATION

K-6 teaching certification or equivalent

LOCATION

Located in South Jersey (Camden County area) and Philadelphia.

PAY RANGE

This is a part-time, 10-month position (September-June). Pay reflects the successful candidate's skills, qualifications, and relevant experience at a range of $30-35/hour. Paid orientation and onboarding to be scheduled in August.
