What You Will Be Doing


Oil and Gas Revenue Auditors are professional level positions that audit taxpayers that file Oil and Gas Production Tax returns under AS Most audits are conducted in a team under the direction of a lead auditor.

All audits are conducted to ensure the taxpayer filed and paid the correct amount of tax according to the statutes and regulations.


The position also participates in regulation projects; tests and maintains the Tax System; participates in and conducts training; and responds to taxpayer inquiries.

In 2022, the Oil and Gas Production Tax group administered over $2.4 billion in tax collected from oil and gas companies


The Oil and Gas Production Tax Auditors are instrumental in ensuring the accuracy of tax paid by performing complex audits on taxpayers from Alaska's largest industry.

The Oil and Gas Production Tax group's primary objective is to ensure that taxpayers required to file under AS 43.55 know what they need to file, file accurately, and pay the correct amount of tax.

This position is a flexibly staffed position.

The vacancy may be filled at either the 1,2, or 3 level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience and promotions to higher levels in the 1,2, or 3 series are based on meeting specific experience and knowledge criteria without the need to reapply for the higher position.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

We are located on the 5th floor of the Atwood Building (550 West 7th Avenue) in downtown Anchorage.


This position has a private cubicle in a secure office and all desks are electric and can be raised to work standing up.

Free parking is provided and the office is within walking distances to downtown amenities. Our team includes experienced, long term, dedicated, friendly, and knowledgeable staff.


The Oil and Gas Production Tax group includes: three tax technician positions (the supervisor and two tax technician 1/2/3 positions), three lead auditors, eight auditor 1/2/3s, an Oil and Gas Revenue Specialist, and a Revenue Audit Supervisor.

  • Some knowledge of Alaska production tax statutes and regulations.
  • Ability to develop research strategies and analytical skills to participate in audits and perform a variety of limited and clearly defined assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

Oil and Gas Revenue Auditor 1


A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in accounting, finance or any business area that includes at least 18 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in accounting, auditing, or tax.

Three semester hours (four quarter hours) in business law or statistical sampling may apply toward the required credit hours.

Or

Possess a Certified Public Accountant certificate.

Or substitution:


A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any area that includes at least 18 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in accounting, auditing, or tax.

Three semester hours (4 quarter hours) in business law or statistical sampling may apply toward the required credit hours.

AND EITHER
One year of professional experience auditing or examining financial information and data.

The required experience includes work such as an Accountant 1 or Tax Auditor 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

OR


Two years of journey level technical experience performing technical tax, accounting or audit functions in the examination, verification, maintenance, reconciliation, and reporting of accounts and financial data.

The required experience includes work such as a Tax Technician 3 or Accounting Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.


Special Note:
Applicants who will obtain a qualifying bachelor's degree from an accredited college within three months will qualify to apply.

An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within three months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in accounting, finance or any business area that includes at least 18 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in accounting, auditing, or tax.

Three semester hours (four quarter hours) in business law or statistical sampling may apply toward the required credit hours.

AND EITHER
The successful completion of the Oil and Gas Revenue Auditor 1 flexible training plan criteria

One year of professional experience auditing or examining financial information and data.


The required experience includes work such as a Tax Auditor 2, Corporate Income Tax Auditor 1, Oil and Gas Revenue Auditor 1, or Accountant II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
